The Group Chat That Decided to Delete Me

It started with a typo. It ended with me locked out of my own life.

It all started with a ghost notification at 3:14 AM.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand, its cold blue light cutting through the darkness of my bedroom. I groaned, reaching out to flip it over, expecting a spam email or a delayed work message. Instead, my screen displayed an open invitation to a private messaging app I didn’t even remember downloading.

The group chat had no name. The members had no profile pictures—just blank, gray circles.

But what made my blood run cold was the very first message pinned at the top of the chat, sent by a user named Admin_0:

"Subject: Leo. Age: 26. Location: Third-floor apartment. Current Status: Reaching for his phone."

My fingers froze. I looked at the screen, my heart hammering against my ribs. How did they know? I stared at the blank gray circles of the other five members. Then, a new bubble popped up.

"User_4: He’s looking at the screen now. He looks scared. Should we edit his morning routine?"

I swallowed hard, my thumbs trembling as I hovered over the keyboard. "Who is this? How do you know where I am?" I typed, my heart pounding so loudly I could hear it in my ears. I hit send.

The reply was almost instantaneous.

"Admin_0: He thinks it’s a prank. Classic Leo."

"User_2: Let’s give him a little demonstration. What’s the forecast for his morning?"

"User_4: 08:15 AM. Distracted by a notification. Spills scalding hot black coffee all over his favorite blue linen shirt."

I stared at the messages, a cold sweat breaking out across my neck. I didn't reply. I forcefully shut down the phone, tossed it onto the mattress, and refused to look at it for the rest of the night. It had to be a sick joke. Maybe one of my friends had hacked my camera, or maybe I was just hallucinating from exhaustion.

By 8:00 AM, the sunlight streaming through my window washed away some of the midnight paranoia. I dressed in my favorite blue linen shirt, grabbed my keys, and walked down to the local café. I ordered a hot Americano, completely forgetting about the midnight chat.

At exactly 8:14 AM, I stepped onto the sidewalk.

Buzz. My phone vibrated in my pocket. A sharp jolt of memory hit me, and I hastily pulled the phone out. The lock screen flashed with a notification from the nameless app: "User_4: Look down."

Before my brain could process the words, a kid on a skateboard clipped my shoulder from behind. I stumbled, the paper cup slipped from my grip, and the boiling hot black coffee splashed entirely across the chest of my blue shirt.

The pain was searing, but the sudden, suffocating terror that gripped my chest was far worse. I looked at the digital clock on my phone screen.

It was exactly 8:15 AM.

I didn't go to work. I ran back to my apartment, locking all three deadbolts behind me. I pulled out my phone, my hands shaking so violently I almost dropped it. The group chat was already buzzing with activity.

"User_2: The coffee script executed perfectly. What's next?""User_5: He’s hiding in his room. Boring. Let’s fast forward to the finale.""Admin_0: Agreed. Subject 'Leo' has become redundant. Initiating total deletion protocol."

"Stop it! Please!" I typed, tears of absolute panic blurring my vision. "What do you want from me? Who are you?!"

My text message didn't send. Instead, a red exclamation mark popped up next to it. Below it, a final system message from the app appeared on my screen:

"System: You are no longer authorized to post in this chat. Deletion in progress... 99%."

Suddenly, the lights in my apartment flickered and died. A strange, suffocating silence filled the room. I stumbled backward into the hallway, catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror. My breath hitched.

My reflection was fading. First my hands, then my chest, turning into a grainy, pixelated gray static.

In a panic, I threw open my front door and screamed for help, running into the crowded street. I saw my landlord walking his dog. "Please! Help me!" I yelled, grabbing his shoulder.

He stopped, looking right through me with empty, indifferent eyes. He didn't flinch. He didn't even register my touch. He just kept walking, stepping right through the space where my foot should have been.

I looked down at my hands. They were completely gone. I was nothing but a whisper of smoke in the morning air.

My phone, lying on the pavement where I had dropped it, lit up one last time. On the screen, a new notification flashed from the nameless app:
