The Girl Who Spoke to Cats

Emma was twelve years old when she felt like the loneliest girl in the world.

She lived in a small town surrounded by green hills and quiet streets. From the outside, her life seemed normal. She went to school every day, lived in a cozy house, and had everything she needed. But inside, Emma felt empty.

A year earlier, her father had moved to another city for work. He promised he would visit often, but the visits became fewer and fewer. Her mother worked long hours to support the family, leaving Emma alone most afternoons.

At school, things weren't much better. While other children laughed together and shared stories, Emma often sat quietly by herself. She wasn't shy; she simply felt disconnected, as if she didn't belong anywhere.

One rainy afternoon, Emma walked home from school with her head down, watching puddles form on the sidewalk. The sky was gray, and cold wind blew through the streets.

As she passed an old alley behind a bakery, she heard a faint sound.

"Meow..."

She stopped.

The sound came again.

"Meow..."

Curious, Emma walked toward the alley. Hidden behind a stack of wooden boxes was a tiny orange kitten. Its fur was soaked from the rain, and its small body trembled with fear.

Emma's heart sank.

The kitten looked up at her with large golden eyes.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then the kitten slowly stepped forward.

Emma carefully knelt down.

"Hey there," she whispered.

The kitten rubbed its head against her hand.

At that moment, something changed.

Emma felt a warmth she hadn't felt in a very long time.

Without thinking twice, she took off her jacket and wrapped the kitten inside.

"I'm taking you home."

The kitten purred softly as if it understood.

When Emma arrived home, her mother was surprised.

"A cat?" she asked.

Emma nodded nervously.

"Please, Mom. Just for tonight. It's cold outside."

Her mother looked at the tiny animal and sighed.

"Just for tonight."

Emma smiled for the first time in weeks.

That night, she prepared a small bed using old blankets. The kitten curled up and immediately fell asleep.

Emma sat beside it for hours.

For the first time in a long while, she didn't feel alone.

The next morning, the kitten was still there.

And the next.

And the next.

Eventually, her mother gave in.

"I suppose he can stay."

Emma jumped with excitement.

She named him Sunny because of his bright orange fur.

From that day forward, Sunny followed Emma everywhere.

When she did homework, Sunny sat beside her.

When she watched television, Sunny curled up on her lap.

When she cried, Sunny somehow always knew.

He would gently place a paw on her hand and stare at her until she smiled.

As months passed, Emma began changing.

She smiled more often.

She laughed more.

She spent less time worrying and more time enjoying life.

Even her teachers noticed.

One day, her teacher asked, "Emma, what's different about you lately?"

Emma simply smiled.

"I made a friend."

At home, Sunny became part of the family.

He chased toy mice through the living room.

He climbed curtains and knocked over flower pots.

Sometimes he created complete chaos.

But nobody minded.

Because every time Sunny entered a room, he brought happiness with him.

One winter evening, however, something happened that Emma would never forget.

A heavy snowstorm hit the town.

The wind howled outside, and snow covered the streets.

Emma was reading in her room when she realized Sunny wasn't there.

She searched the house.

No Sunny.

She checked the kitchen.

Nothing.

The living room.

Nothing.

Then panic hit.

The back door was slightly open.

Sunny had somehow gotten outside.

Emma's heart raced.

Without hesitation, she put on her coat and ran into the storm.
