The Ghosts of 'Shawshank' Penitentiary

Many people are familiar with the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio as the setting for the beloved film "The Shawshank Redemption."

However, the historic prison, which closed its doors in 1990, is also rumored to be paranormal.

The maximum-security jail, which houses some of the most seasoned offenders, has a history of violent confrontations, suicides, and murders, according to Theresa Argie, a paranormal investigator and author known as "The Haunted Housewife."

Argie tells TODAY.com, "(The reformatory) had this incredible vein of violence that ran through it almost from the beginning."

"It makes sense why a location like that would be haunted," she remarks. "You can feel it in your bones—there's something bad there."

Indeed, a plethora of ghost stories from the former prison exist.

We encountered female ghosts there, which Argie found to be really intriguing. She states that one of them is probably the spouse of a former warden who was fatally shot by mistake while removing a box from a closet shelf.

Argie claims that they have recordings of a woman sobbing and occasionally the scent of rose perfume in the bedroom.

Another ghost that is supposed to haunt the reformatory is a woman who is seen crying while sitting in the prison chapel. She vanishes as soon as you get close to the woman seated in the pew. "She has been observed walking by others," Argie claims.

And then, Argie said, there's the evil force there. And she claims to have spoken with it through a medium.

She remembered, "He would literally be cursing at me."

They were unnerved by their encounters with the angry ghost, but they weren't really afraid until he followed Argie's partner home.

Argie tells TODAY.com, "One day, she recognized him from a reflection in her window. She saw this thing in the back, this shadow figure."

Following their consultation with a paranormal investigator, Argie reports that "we haven't seen him since."
