THE FORGOTEN TRAP
Sometimes, the past has a way of catching up to you.
It was an old house, abandoned for decades, but Sarah had no choice. The storm had come out of nowhere, and the nearest shelter was this dilapidated farmhouse. As she trudged inside, the musty air clung to her skin, thick with the scent of mildew and decay. The wooden floorboards groaned under her feet as she stepped deeper into the house, every creak echoing like a warning.
Her flashlight flickered, its beam trembling across the walls. She scanned the room, noticing old paintings covered in dust and furniture that had been left to rot. There was a sudden chill in the air that made her shiver. She told herself it was just the storm, but something in her gut told her this place wasn't just abandoned—it was waiting.
In the corner of the room, a trapdoor caught her eye. It was half-hidden under a rug, its iron handle rusted and worn. A strange feeling gripped her as she knelt to inspect it. She’d heard rumors about the house—whispers of something terrible buried below, something from the past that shouldn’t be disturbed.
But curiosity gnawed at her. She pulled at the handle. At first, it wouldn’t budge. Then, with a creak and a groan, it gave way, opening into a dark, narrow passage. A foul smell—like rotting meat—wafted up from the depths.
Sarah hesitated. Should she really go down there? But the storm was getting worse, the wind howling against the walls, and she couldn’t stay upstairs all night. She grabbed her flashlight tightly and descended into the darkness.
The stairs were narrow and slick with age. As she reached the bottom, she found herself in a small, stone-walled room. The only source of light was her flickering flashlight. And that’s when she saw it.
A strange contraption was set in the middle of the room—a massive iron cage with rusted chains hanging down from the ceiling. The chains led to a mechanism in the far corner, something that looked like a lever, half hidden in the shadows.
Before she could step closer, the trapdoor above her slammed shut with a deafening crash. Panic surged through her veins as the room seemed to close in. She was trapped. Something moved in the corner of her eye, a shape shifting in the darkness.
A voice, faint and distant, seemed to call her name. It echoed off the stone walls, growing louder and louder. She spun around, heart hammering, but saw nothing. The temperature dropped, her breath visible in the air.
That’s when she realized—she wasn’t alone.
The chains rattled, and the cage creaked as if it were alive. Slowly, the lever in the corner began to shift on its own, moving as though some unseen force was guiding it.
Her pulse raced as a horrifying truth settled in. This wasn't just a house—this was a trap, and she was its prey.
And the worst part? She wasn’t the first to fall for it.
