The Calls Only Came When I Was Alone

Some voices aren’t meant to be answered…

By hasnain pathanPublished 6 months ago • 3 min read

This story is inspired by real fears of isolation and the unknown. I never used to be afraid of silence.

In fact, I craved it. After moving into my small apartment on the edge of town, the quiet felt like a blessing. No traffic, no loud neighbors—just the soft hum of the refrigerator and the occasional creak of old wood settling into the night.

It was peaceful.

At least, it was… until the calls started.

The first time it happened, I didn’t think much of it. My phone rang a little after midnight. I remember glancing at the screen, half-asleep, expecting to see a name.

But there was nothing.

No number. No caller ID. Just the word: “Unknown.”

I hesitated.

Then I answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Not the normal kind—the kind that feels empty. This silence felt… heavy. Like someone was there, breathing quietly, waiting.

“Hello?” I repeated, my voice a little sharper.

Click.

The call ended.

I stared at my phone for a few seconds, then shrugged it off. Probably a glitch. Maybe a spam call.

I went back to sleep.

The second call came the next night.

This time, it was exactly 12:17 AM.

Again, “Unknown.”

A strange unease settled in my chest, but I answered anyway.

“Hello?”

At first, nothing.

Then… a faint sound.

It was so quiet I almost missed it.

Breathing.

Slow. Uneven. Like someone trying not to be heard.

“Who is this?” I asked.

The breathing stopped.

And then, in a voice so soft it barely felt real, I heard:

“…you’re alone.”

The line went dead.

I didn’t sleep that night.

I checked every door, every window. I even looked under the bed like a child afraid of monsters. Everything was locked. Everything was normal.

But it didn’t feel normal anymore.

The next day, I told myself I was overreacting. Maybe it was a prank. Someone messing with me.

Still, I kept my phone on silent that night.

It didn’t matter.

At exactly 12:17 AM, the screen lit up.

Incoming Call: Unknown.

I didn’t answer.

The ringing continued.

And continued.

Longer than any normal call should.

Finally, it stopped.

A second later, a notification appeared.

Voicemail.

My hands trembled as I pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then, the same breathing.

Closer this time.

Clearer.

And then the voice.

“…why didn’t you answer?”

I dropped the phone.

After that, the calls became a pattern.

Every night.

12:17 AM.

Only when I was alone.

I tested it once.

I invited a friend over, hoping maybe I was imagining things.

We sat in the living room, talking, laughing, trying to act normal. Midnight passed.

12:17 came… and went.

No call.

I felt a strange mix of relief and dread.

Because that meant one thing.

Whatever was calling me… knew when I was alone.

The worst night came a week later.

I had fallen asleep on the couch, exhausted from days of anxiety and no real rest.

When I woke up, the room was dark.

Too dark.

The clock read 12:16 AM.

And then—

My phone started ringing.

Right on time.

I didn’t want to answer.

Every instinct screamed at me to ignore it.

But something else… something stronger… pushed me.

I picked up the phone.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then, the breathing.

Right next to my ear.

Not through the phone.

In the room.

I froze.

“…you’re not alone anymore,” the voice whispered.

My blood ran cold.

Slowly, I turned my head.

Toward the hallway.

The darkness there seemed thicker. Heavier.

And then I saw it.

A shape.

Tall. Still. Watching.

My phone slipped from my hand as the call ended.

The thing in the hallway tilted its head… almost curiously.

And then—

My phone rang again.

But this time…

It wasn’t in my hand.

It was coming from the hallway.

From the darkness.

From… it.

I don’t live there anymore.

I don’t stay alone anymore.

But sometimes, late at night, when everything is quiet…

My phone lights up.

No number.

No name.

Just one word.

“Calling…”

And I swear…

Even when I don’t answer…

I can still hear the breathing. Would you answer the call?”
