Rain hammered against the windshield as Hamza tightened his grip on the steering wheel. The forest road ahead looked endless, swallowed by fog and darkness.

“Tell me again why we thought this trip was a good idea?” Sana muttered from the back seat.

“To relax,” Bilal replied with a laugh. “No internet. No college stress. Just one weekend in a cozy cabin.”

“Cozy cabins in horror movies never end well,” Areeba whispered.

Everyone laughed except Daniyal, who stared silently out the window at the towering pine trees. Something about the forest felt wrong. Too quiet. Too empty.

After another twenty minutes, the headlights finally revealed the cabin.

It stood alone among the trees like it had been abandoned for years. One weak yellow light glowed near the porch.

“Finally,” Hamza sighed.

The group stepped outside into the freezing air. The forest smelled wet and rotten, and somewhere in the distance, a branch snapped.

Sana immediately turned around. “Did you hear that?”

“Probably an animal,” Bilal said.

But even he didn’t sound convinced.

Inside, the cabin was old but warm. Dust covered the furniture, and the wooden floor creaked beneath every step.

Areeba found an old guestbook near the fireplace.

“People actually stayed here?” she asked.

She flipped through the pages. Most entries were years old.

Then she froze.

One page simply read:

DON’T GO OUTSIDE AFTER MIDNIGHT.

Below it, another message was written in shaky handwriting.

HE WATCHES FROM THE TREES.

“Very funny,” Hamza said. “Someone trying to scare tourists.”

Still, nobody laughed this time.

By midnight, the storm outside had become violent. Wind slammed against the cabin walls while tree branches scratched the windows like fingers.

The group sat together near the fireplace.

Then the lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room instantly.

“Hamza?” Sana whispered.

“I’m checking the generator.”

Daniyal grabbed a flashlight and followed him outside.

The cold hit them immediately.

The forest seemed alive now, moving with shadows and mist.

The generator sat behind the cabin near the trees.

As Hamza crouched beside it, Daniyal swept the flashlight around nervously.

Then he saw it.

A figure standing between the trees.

Tall.

Motionless.

Wearing a pale mask.

“Hamza…” Daniyal whispered.

The figure disappeared.

“What?”

“I saw someone.”

Hamza rolled his eyes. “You’re imagining things.”

Then something heavy slammed against the cabin door behind them.

Both boys spun around.

Sana screamed from inside.

They rushed back into the cabin and locked the door.

“What happened?” Bilal asked.

“There’s someone out there,” Daniyal said breathlessly.

“No way.”

Before anyone could speak again, three loud knocks echoed through the cabin.

BANG.

BANG.

BANG.

Everyone froze.

Slowly, Areeba peeked through the window.

At first she saw nothing.

Then lightning flashed.

A masked man stood near the porch holding an axe.

Sana screamed.

The figure tilted his head slightly… almost smiling beneath the mask.

Then he vanished into the darkness again.

Panic exploded inside the cabin.

“We need to leave NOW,” Sana cried.

“In this storm?” Hamza snapped. “The road is flooded!”

Another sound came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Everyone stared toward the staircase.

“That’s impossible,” Bilal whispered. “Nobody was upstairs.”

The footsteps stopped.

Silence.

Then a loud dragging noise scraped across the ceiling.

Areeba began crying.

Daniyal grabbed a kitchen knife while Hamza picked up a fireplace poker.

Together, they climbed the stairs.

Every step creaked beneath their feet.

At the end of the hallway, one door stood slightly open.

The dragging sound came from inside.

Hamza slowly pushed the door open.

The room was empty.

But written across the wall in dark red letters were the words:

YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT.

Suddenly the closet door burst open.

The masked man lunged out swinging the axe.

Hamza barely dodged in time.

The blade buried itself into the wall with a sickening crack.

“RUN!” Daniyal shouted.

They sprinted downstairs as the killer followed slowly behind them, dragging the axe across the wooden steps.

SCRAAAAAPE.

SCRAAAAAPE.

The sound alone felt terrifying.

Bilal tried opening the front door, but it wouldn’t move.

“It’s stuck!”

“No,” Sana whispered in horror. “He locked us in.”

The masked figure reached the bottom of the stairs.

Lightning flashed behind him through the windows.

His mask was stained dark with old blood.

Without warning, he charged.

Chaos erupted.

Everyone scattered through the cabin.

Areeba hid beneath a table, trembling violently as footsteps echoed around her.

Somewhere nearby, glass shattered.

Hamza screamed.

Then suddenly stopped.

Silence followed.

Tears rolled down Sana’s face as she clutched Daniyal’s arm.

“We’re going to die here…”

“No,” Daniyal said, though fear shook his voice. “We fight.”

The killer emerged from the darkness again, axe resting on his shoulder.

This time they could hear him breathing behind the mask.

Slow.

Calm.

Like he had done this before.

Daniyal threw a lantern toward him.

It exploded against the floor.

Fire spread instantly across the room.

The killer stepped back.

Sana and Daniyal rushed toward the kitchen door and forced it open.

They ran into the forest as flames consumed the cabin behind them.

Rain poured heavily through the trees.

Branches clawed at their faces as they stumbled deeper into the woods.

Then Sana stopped suddenly.

“Daniyal…”

Ahead of them stood dozens of wooden crosses hanging from the trees.

Old clothes and bones lay scattered beneath them.

This wasn’t random.

This forest was his hunting ground.

A twig snapped behind them.

Slowly, they turned around.

The masked man stood only a few feet away.

The axe rose slowly into the air.

And then the forest went black.
