The Alarm in the Dark

In the Deepest Shadows, Hope Was Only a Button Away

The Alarm in the Dark

Somewhere beneath the old streets, a voice echoed through the dark — thin, raw, endless. It rose and fell like a tide of pain, bouncing off stone walls that had heard it for years. No one who passed close enough ever forgot that sound. And no one who heard it ever saw what made it.

The things that lived down there didn't hunt the way ordinary creatures did. They didn't chase. They *waited*. Loose stones, hidden wires, shadows pressed flat against the walls like folded paper — every inch of the corridor was a trap set for whoever wandered in next.

That night, it was Lili and Lula.

They walked close together, arms linked, voices low and easy, the kind of laughter shared only between people who trust each other completely. Neither of them noticed the silence pressing in around them, thicker with every step. Neither of them knew that for one of them, this was the last walk they would ever take.

The first attack came without warning — a shape detaching itself from the wall, fast and silent, eyes catching what little light there was. Then another. And another. The vampires had been waiting a long time, and they did not waste it.

Lula screamed. Not from fear — from the burn of claws across her arm, the cold grip closing around her wrist, dragging her down into the dark with the others. She fought. She kicked, twisted, tore herself free again and again, every second a battle just to keep breathing.

And then she saw it.

High on the corridor wall, half-hidden behind a curtain of hanging cobwebs, a small red alarm button glowed faintly — the only point of light in the entire tunnel. A lifeline. A way out. But it was *too far*. Every time she reached for it, something pulled her back, something screamed in her ear, something dragged her closer to the floor.

She thought of Lili. She thought of every laugh they'd shared just minutes ago, every plan they'd made for tomorrow — plans that now felt impossibly far away. And that thought gave her something the fear couldn't take.

With a final surge of strength, screaming through the pain, Lula tore an arm free, lunged upward, and slammed her palm against the button.

For one heartbeat, nothing happened.

Then light flooded the corridor. Sirens. Boots pounding stone. The armed response team burst through the far doors, flashlights cutting through the dark like blades, and the creatures that had ruled that tunnel for so long finally scattered, driven back into the cracks they'd crawled out of.

They pulled Lula out into the night air, shaking, bleeding, but alive.

She never stopped carrying Lili with her after that — not as a loss, but as a reason. Every step she took afterward was for both of them. And somewhere, in the quiet moments before sleep, she swore she could still hear that voice in the dark... except now, it sounded almost like *thank you*.

Sometimes the bravest thing isn't surviving — it's reaching for the light when everything in you says it's too far away.
