Fleeting Life
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. As the click of the high heels grew louder Curtis covered his mouth and held his breath. From under the bed he watched as the red heels entered the room and went straight to the closet. The closet door flew open, followed by an irritated click of a tongue, and then it was slammed shut. When the shoes turned to point at the bed Curtis broke out in goosebumps. The shoes turned when they reached the bed and it shifted as she sat down. Curtis silently edged himself out from under the mattress and tried to slink out of the bedroom. He was army crawling out when the woman noticed him. She let out a scream that caused Curtis to jump to his feet and run down the hallway. Unfortunately for him, the woman was right behind him. He tried to fake a move to the right into a room but she didn't fall for it. Instead she gained enough distance to plunge a chef's knife into his back. The woman pulled it out and attempted another strike, but Curtis was able to jump down the flight of stairs to his left. He landed hard, but compared to his knife wound he could handle the pain in his legs. He rushed for the door he had stupidly opened, but it was locked again. Did she lock it? The clicking of the heels reached the tiled floor and turned to clacking noises. She was right behind him. He turned to face her and was met with another stab, this time to his stomach. He looked down at the blood that had started to pool at his feet and then up to his attacker. “You shouldn't have opened the door.” She smiled.

The Unfed. Runner-up in Spooky Micro Challenge.
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. That’s what they told me when they hired me for the strange security job. The pay was great. Maybe that’s why I endured the creepy desolate lab, but the lab wasn’t the worst part. Getting paid to watch a frail girl just felt wrong. If my girlfriend wasn’t pregnant I doubt I’d have returned after seeing her in the monitor.

Do Not Open the Door
Do Not Open the Door The wind howled through the cracks in the old wooden cabin, its mournful cry echoing off the desolate mountains. It was a stormy night, the kind where even the bravest of souls would rather stay inside, far away from the dangers lurking in the dark wilderness. Yet here I was, alone in my grandfather's secluded cabin, miles from the nearest town, with nothing but the faint glow of a dying fireplace for company.

Tessa’s Tour
There was only one rule: Don’t open the door. Dr. Bannister, Tessa’s hypnotherapist, had been unequivocal about this, but Tessa never understood why. Today, Dr. Peyton, a younger and more relaxed replacement, was filling in. He eased her into the session with casual chitchat about holidays and family, barely skimming through Dr. Bannister’s detailed notes.

When they scream! . Content Warning.
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. The detective reads on the cell phone of the deceased man with his rib cage exposed. Flesh barely hanging on from the walls slowly slides down as the detective walks around the trail of mutilated corpses. He pulls out a small rag as he holds it up to his nose to shield him from the smell. As he steps around avoiding the pools of blood, his stomach starts to turn and fights to come out of him. While he examines the room his mind starts to slowly piece together the carnage that occurred.

Inevitable Agony
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. Hopelessly, they held fast to that rule. There was only one door, one way out, but the screams were on the other side. It was a game, one of torment, and they knew that, so they cowered away from the door.

The Forbidden Door: A Tale of Secrets and Shadows. AI-Generated.
It was a simple rule, etched into the worn wood above the heavy oak door. Yet, for the young man, it held an irresistible allure. The room beyond was shrouded in darkness, its secrets tantalizingly out of reach. Curiosity gnawed at him, a persistent itch he couldn't scratch.
