The Duck
There was only one rule. Don’t open the door. There used to be more. But things got simpler after dad died. Peter was playing underneath the kitchen table when mom told him. Her bare feet appeared beneath the edge of the table cloth. Strange. Normally she wore red tennis shoes. Peter crawled out. Her skin was pale and drooped beneath her eyes like heavy sandbags. Then she told him dad died. And then the rule: Don’t open the door.

This incident took place before the partition of India, a time when, despite the turmoil, life continued its normal course. A strange and terrifying event, passed down to us from my grandfather, Muhammad Ahmed, occurred in 1946. This story has left an indelible fear on my mind. There was only one rule: Don't open the door
Author: Dream Books Sanjeevi "Too much curiosity is like a fire; the person who stokes that fire too much ends up getting burnt." “Abarth was right: perhaps it is better a locked door can keep secrets, but it also keeps the danger away.” "It is a proverb to say that when the wind blows, people should stay at home. Fools seek the storm." “Even if you seek knowledge, do not wake; a serpent concealed in the grass.” "The eyes that seek justice must be willing to live in the shadows." “It might be a general law actually that any wrong step forward can lead a man straight into the abysm.”

The Door in the Wall. Runner-up in Spooky Micro Challenge.
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. This was a difficult rule when you were small, and the door was tiny and at your level. Mika was certain that fairies lived there. She had noticed it one day while playing in her grandmother's kitchen. It looked like an interesting knot. She stared at it, and it seemed to change. She reached out toward it and--

Don't Let Them See You
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. Grandpa kept it locked, the key always hanging from a chain around his neck—the same key I now hold in my hands. I managed to slip it from him unnoticed on the day of his funeral. With a deep breath, I insert the gold key into the lock and slowly twist. The door groans on its hinges. As I step inside, a sharp crash echoes through the room—a cup shattering on the floor.

Heavy Traffic. Content Warning.
There was only one rule: Don't open the door. The Magician was adamant about this. Rebecca had signed a non-disclosure statement when she took the job as First Stage Assistant. The pay was over-the-top, so it was an easy decision to accept the job with one absurd rule. Until she heard the screaming.

The Whispering Shadows
It was a cold autumn evening when I received the letter. There was no return address, just my name scrawled in thick black ink. Intrigued, I opened it to find an invitation to visit an old manor on the outskirts of town—a place I had never heard of before. The letter claimed I was the inheritor of an estate that had belonged to a distant relative. Curiosity got the better of me, and against my better judgment, I decided to visit.

The Cuckoo Clock
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. I was an apprentice to a clockmaker. I loved the mechanics of clockwork, but I was particularly fascinated by cuckoo clocks. The intricate mechanism that made a tiny bird emerge from the small door to sing its "CUCK-OO" intrigued me.
