Ivy amongst "those we do not speak of"

If you're anything like me, then you enjoy movies that throw you for a loop at the end. Anything made by M. Night Shyamalan will definitely do that for you. I started out on his movies as a kid. The first movie I ever watched by him was "Signs." That being a great movie, my next I had seen by him was "Split." Split alone was an exceptional movie. But if you enjoyed "Signs" or "Split," then you will enjoy the one I am speaking of now, "The Village," has one heck of an ending that will definitely leave you with many questions that sort of get answered on their own when you sit back and think of how the movie played out.

Jaoquin Phoenix plays an exceptional role in this movie. Most of us loved him as his rendition of the Joker, but in this movie he's a quiet and kind person living inside of this village. One of the main characters is a blind girl who is a very brave soul. The village in which everyone lives is called "Covington Woods." It's a small village surrounded by woods with some very strange creatures living in them. Everyone in this movie refers to these creatures as "those we do not speak of." The creatures have no actual name, but you get a few good glimpses of them throughout the movie. One is pictured above.

In the movie, you'll notice in the beginning that some girls are burying a red flower. Why bury a red flower? The reason behind that is they refer to red as "the bad color." They say this because they have everyone understanding that red attracts these creatures. They made animal sacrifices to keep the peace between the woodland creatures and the people in the village, and they post watches at night. As you see in the cover photo, Ivy (who is the blind girl) is wearing a yellow cloak. They call yellow a good color because yellow is a neutral color.

Throughout the movie, you'll see Lucius Hunt falling in love with Ivy Walker. As you read this article, remember Ivy's last name. If you watch the movie, remember it then too as you will come to an in-between the lines realization at the end of the movie. As their love grows, they make an announcement that they will be married. One of the characters, a special needs boy, doesn't quite understand the aspect of this. He loves Ivy, so he becomes jealous and chooses to stab Lucius repeatedly. See, these people live as if they are in the 1800's. They don't have updated medicine or qualified doctors. The elders who created this life they live were trying to run from their own pains they experienced.

They later realize that they cannot run from pain, as it is apart of life. Instead, they send Ivy through the woods in that yellow cloak to go to other towns to get the medicine they need. You later find out that the creatures are only costumes. That's right, costumes created by the elders to keep people from finding out the true secret of where they live, which I'll tell you in a moment.

Ivy is distraught at the thought of losing Lucius. She and Lucius have loved each other since they were children. She's also very angry at Noah, the special needs boy who committed a crime of passion. As he hears word that she's going through the woods to a town to get the medicine, he digs under the floorboards of the room he's locked in for the crime. He finds one of the old costume suits that were hidden, and ends up following Ivy into the woods. Ivy does not know it's Noah, but when she realizes there is a monster after her, she ends up finding a way to kill it, not realizing it was Noah dressed as the monster.

Here's the part where you'll want to remember that Ivy's last name is Walker. As Ivy makes it through the woods, she comes upon a wall with vines that she later climbs over. Once she is over the wall, a park ranger stops her. He is just as confused as she is as to what is going on. In this scene, you'll notice that on the door of the truck, it says "Walker Wildlife Preserve." Remember that last name? Walker. The truth behind that, is Ivy's father and mother agreed to create this life because one of Ivy's relatives was a billionaire, and was murdered. The Walker family owns the wildlife preserve, which was an in-between the lines statement of the movie. All in all, the movie is wonderful and will truly throw you for a loop at the ending. It's stated under horror, but it's not exactly scary, and I get scared at just about any horror movie unless it's slasher related.

I encourage you to definitely check this movie out. It's much better than you'd think.
