Prologue:

The squishing of mud can be heard as grade a military boots hit the canvas. A small group of certified trained professionals walk through the pitch Black Forest. Their laser sights are on and their night vision goggles as well. The only lights admitting are the red lasers and the green goggles.

“Anything yet Sarg?” Said the Private. “Nothin, stay sharp, we don’t know what we’re dealing with.” Said the Sergeant, the Sergeant continues. “Let’s split up, cover more ground. Six of us. Ryan and Charlie. You guys are with me. Logan, you take Brick and Roger.”

“Yes sir.” Logan said. He continued. “Alright boys lets move out.” The three begin to go right. “We’ll meet up at the radio tower up ahead.” The Sergeant said before the three moved out of earshot. “Copy.” Said Logan.

The Sargent took his men and turned left. Opposite of Logan and his men. “Somethin don’t feel right Sarg.” Said Charlie. “I’m with Charlie on this Sarg. It’s quiet. They say you can tell somethin bad is about to happen in a forest when it goes deathly quiet.” Said Ryan. “Yeah, like a bear or a mountain lion. We are in their territory.” Charlie responded.

“It’s ok, the radio tower is three clicks north. We’ll start heading that way once we finish sweeping the perimeter.” Said the Sarg trying to comfort his men. “It should take maybe another minute to clear this area.” He continued. The three had their guns raised at shoulder length. Each pointing ahead but not at each other.

The only noise the three could hear was the crunching of their boots over the now solid soil and the crunchy leafs.

On the other end was Corporal Logan and Privates first class Brick and Roger. The three moved throughout the mushy mud still. “Jesus Christ the sound is annoying.” Roger said as they continued. “Shh.” The Corporal said. “Stay quiet, we don’t know what’s out there and we need to finish covering the area.” He continued.

The three kept along the squishy path. Then out of nowhere the Corporal falls and a loud **SPLASH** can be heard. “Fuck!” The Corporal shouts as he comes back up. “Corporal!” Roger says. The Corporal fell into a steep puddle, from the looks of it.

The Corporal looks down again and feels around. “Hey, this isn’t just a very deep puddle. This looks like a small reservoir boys.” The Corporal says. “What?” Brick says confused. “We don’t have diving gear, so I don’t know. All I know is this shouldn’t be hear.” The Corporal says.

“Hey.” The voice is that of the Sarges. “Sarge?” Roger says. He turns around and is immediately grabbed. He drops his gun as a loud and **BOOMING** siren blares throughout the forest.

This gets the attention of the Sergeant and his two men. They come running. “Heeeelllppppp!” Roger yells. Brick starts firing at the creature. Bullets seem to have no effect on it as it clips Brick with its other hand. Brick goes flying back into a tree. A loud “**CRACK**” can be heard when he hits it. He falls unconsious.

The Sergeant and the two privates reach the Corporal who finally drags himself out of the small reservoir. He’s soaked and the temperature isn’t in his favor. “It’s so fucking cold.” The Corporal says to himself. The temperature is around 55 degrees. The water was nearly and unnaturally below freezing.

“Corporal!” The Sergeant says as he helps him up. “What the hell happened here? Where’s Roger and what the hell was that noise?” He demands. Charlie runs over to Brick to check on him. “Sarg, we don’t know. It took Roger and flew Brick into that goddamn fuckin tree.” The Corporal said with pure terror in his voice.

“Hypothermia is gonna kick in soon for me if we don’t get a fire going. That water was below freezing. It shouldn’t have been that cold.” The Corporal says. “Ryan get a fire going.” The Sergeant commanded. Ryan then begins to collect sticks and grass for the fire. “How’s Brick?” The Sergeant asks Charlie.

“He’s in a bad way Sarg, he’s losing blood fast. Best I can do is patch him up. We need an evac, asap or he’s not gonna make it.” Charlie responds with. The Sergeant turns on his comms. “This is Sergeant Eddie Stranron. We need evac at sight Zulu 6, over?” The Sergeant says into his comm system. He awaits for a reply.

He finally gets one from hq. “This is Jacobs on the comms, we can’t get you out of there until the mission is complete. Is the mission complete?” Sergeant Major Jacobs asks. “No, something’s out here with us. It took Roger. Bricks gonna die if we don’t get evac Sarg. C’mon!” Sergeant Eddie says.

“Complete the mission Kilo squad. Over and out.” The Sergeant Major says as the comms go dead. “Fuck!” The sergeant yells as he throws his gun into the ground in anger. Ryan gets a fire started. “Fires up.” Ryan says.

The group huddle around the fire as the Corporal begins to get warm. Brick is still unconsious but bandaged up. “What now Sarg?” Private Ryan asks. “We need to finish the mission. Get to the radio tower... After that we can go home.” The Sergeant says in a confident voice. However confident he was doubt still crept into his voice.

“Ryan and Charlie you two carry Brick. The Corporal will be the caboose and I’ll lead the way to the radio tower.” The Sergeant says.

The Sergeant leads the way as they’re heading through the thick forest towards the tower. “We’re almost there soldiers. Stay strong.” The Sergeant says. As they continue a siren then begins to blare. Not ear piercingly loud but loud. “What the hell is that?!” The Sergeant says in a panic. “Oh fuck.” The Corporal says recognizing the sound. “It’s what took Roger.” He continues.

Roger’s body then comes flying from the trees onto the ground, when he lands it makes a massive “**THUD**” Ryan and Charlie in pure shock drop Brick. A lanky boney arm comes reaching out and grabs Ryan as he fires his gun at it. “Aaaaarrrggggghh!” He shouts as the creature lifts him up into the trees. All that can be heard is a loud “**CRUNCH**” and than silence.

The group doesn’t know what to do. They aim their weapons into the tall trees waiting. Ryan’s body then follows hitting the ground with a massive “**THUD**” the group and find his head missing. “Jesus Christ.” Charlie said. “Stand your ground! We ain’t leaving Brick behind!” The Sergeant yells. “Stand your ground! We ain’t leaving Brick behind!” The creature mimics the words of the Sergeant.

It then emerges from the trees and swoops down and grabs Charlie. It crunches his abdomen and rib cage killing him. This leaves the Corporal and Sergeant left. The two fire among the massive nearly 40ft tall creature.

Bullets doing nothing and running out of options the Sergeant pulls a frag grenade out and chucks it upwards. The frag grenade blows up near the creature and it works. Blowing off a chunk of its upper chest and one of its arms. It comes crashing down landing on the Corporal, crushing one of his legs. He yells in pain as it’s down to the Sergeant.

The Sergeant than pulls out another grenade and finds the face of the creature. Two sirens twinged together by wires and fleshy strings. The Sergeant throws the grenade up and it manages to get into the creatures mouth. The Sergeant hits the deck as the head of the creature explodes killing it.

The creature then falls backwards crashing into trees on its way down destroying them. It hits the ground with a loud “**BOOM**” The Sergeant falls to his knees tired. He looks over and sees The Corporal losing blood fast. He gets up and runs over and attempts to lift the massive arm but it won’t even budge.

“Corporal, I’m gonna have to remove the leg.” Sergeant Eddie says.

“Fuckin hell.” Corporal Logan says. “Get it over with.” He continues.

The last three remaining survivors Sergeant Eddie, Corporal Logan and Private First Class Brick all make it to the radio tower and complete the mission. A helicopter picks them up and safely transports them back to the nearest base where the Sergeant Major is waiting for them. As soon as Eddie gets off the helicopter he socks the Sergeant Major in the face.

Jacobs stumbles back after the hit. Soldiers go to grab Eddie but Jacobs waves them off. “No boys, that one was earned.” The Sergeant Major states. “What the hell did we walk into?” Eddie demands. “C’mon, you got another briefing.” Jacobs says...

About the Creator

Cameron Crisamore2

Well I’m gonna be honest. My weak points are romance when it comes to writing. You won’t find much of that here. Horror is also something I struggle with. Everything else though is good.
