Siberia's Strangest Unsolved Mystery
The Silent Ridge of Kamar Deban

The river was freezing, fed by melting snow from the Kamar Deban mountain range looming overhead. A group of tourists kayaking through the rugged Siberian landscape expected a peaceful escape from the city, but the atmosphere dissolved when they saw a teenage girl standing on the far shore. She was waving her arms frantically and screaming. Her jacket appeared to be stained with blood. When the rescuers reached her, she collapsed into their arms, delirious and sobbing. Through her tears, she managed to utter words that made their blood run as cold as the water: everyone else is dead.
One week earlier, two hiking groups set out into the wilds of Southern Siberia. One was led by Lyudmila Korovina, an experienced mountaineer guiding six students. They planned a high-altitude route across the peaks. On August 4, the weather turned. Heavy rain and wind whipped across the treeless Alpine zone. Visibility vanished, and the temperature plummeted. Lyudmila ordered the group to make camp in an exposed, flat area. They huddled in their tents, shivering as the rain turned to snow.
By dawn on August 5, the situation reached a breaking point. Soaking wet and freezing, Lyudmila ordered an immediate descent toward the tree line for protection. As they struggled through the wind, twenty three year old Sasha suddenly collapsed. Lyudmila stayed behind to help him while the others tried to move forward. Moments later, Lyudmila’s screams for help pierced the air.
Valentina, seventeen, rushed back to find Sasha dead, his eyes vacant. Then, without warning, Lyudmila collapsed as well. Panic swept through the remaining students like wildfire. In a scene of pure horror, the group began to fall apart. Students were bleeding from their ears and noses. They were foaming at the mouth and tearing at their own clothes in a frenzy.
Valentina watched in terror as her peers began to die one by one. She tried to pull Victoria to her feet, but the girl bit her hand and then went limp. Valentina fled toward a cluster of rocks, only to see Tatiana bashing her own head against the stones until she stopped moving. Amidst the madness, Dennis, who was also bleeding, managed to crawl toward Valentina. With his last bit of strength, he gave her a single command: run.
Valentina bolted downhill, stumbling and crawling until she reached the safety of the trees. She spent the next four days wandering alone, following power lines through the desolate mountains. She survived on dried roots and sheer will, eventually reaching a river where the Ukrainian tourists found her.
When rescuers finally reached the site weeks later, they found a gruesome scene. The bodies were scattered near the peak, only hundreds of feet from a sturdy shelter they never reached. While official reports cited hypothermia and heart failure, the sudden, violent nature of their deaths remains a chilling enigma. The mountain kept its secrets, leaving only one survivor to tell the story of the morning the earth seemed to turn against them.
