Shadows of the Betrayer

The Prophecy That Changed Everything

By noraPublished 2 years ago • 4 min read

The day the Queen vanished, the river began to flow backward.

That morning, as the first rays of sunlight touched the surface of the Silvermere River, an unsettling sight unfolded. The river, which usually flowed gently toward the eastern sea, now surged in reverse, as though some invisible force were pulling it back. The water raced upriver, toward the heart of the enchanted forest and its dark, secretive source—Darkmoon Lake. Villagers along the riverbank dropped their tools and stood motionless, eyes wide with fear. Birds scattered, their cries swallowed by the ominous rumble of the river.

“This can only mean disaster,” muttered one of the village elders, his voice quivering. His eyes, clouded with age and dread, scanned the river. “The prophecy spoke of this.”

But soon, the fear in the village was eclipsed by panic in the capital. The impossible news spread like wildfire: Queen Eryna, the kingdom’s protector and beacon of hope, was gone. Her throne stood empty, her chambers locked, and her guards and attendants whispered nervously in the great halls. No one knew where she had gone—or why.

Even stranger, every record of her seemed to be vanishing. Her portraits fell from the walls, her name faded from books and scrolls, and even the kingdom’s oldest statues bore no trace of her likeness. It was as if history itself was being rewritten, erasing her from existence. The royal priests, usually calm and composed, were left clutching their holy tomes, now filled with blank pages.

“Queen Eryna…” High Mage Irivana stood atop the tower of the royal palace, gazing out at the river that twisted and writhed under the morning sky. Her voice was barely above a whisper. “She has vanished so completely… as though she was never truly here.”

“Tell me this isn’t true.” Sir Kael’s voice was low and tense, his hand gripping the hilt of his sword. His piercing gaze bore into the royal steward, Julian, who stood before him, visibly shaken.

Julian said nothing at first. Instead, he handed Kael a letter, sealed with the Queen’s royal crest. The parchment was fresh, the ink barely dry.

Kael broke the seal and read the brief message within, his fingers tightening as he held the page.

"Kael, protect the kingdom. Do not search for me. The river’s reversal is only the beginning. A trial awaits."

“She’s gone,” Kael muttered, his voice laced with frustration and confusion. “But why would she leave us with so little?”

Irivana stepped forward, her robes trailing behind her, the gem atop her staff glinting faintly in the dim light. Her tone was calm, but there was a flicker of unease in her eyes. “This isn’t a simple disappearance. It’s more like… a severing. She hasn’t just left the palace. It’s as if she’s been removed from our very reality.”

“Removed?” Kael frowned, his voice heavy with disbelief. “What does that even mean?”

Irivana’s gaze shifted back to the forest, where the river disappeared into the distance. “The prophecy spoke of the ‘Day of Reversal.’ It foretells not just the disruption of nature, but a test of time and memory itself. We’ve always believed Queen Eryna to be our protector… but what if her true identity is far more complex?”

By nightfall, Kael had gathered a small team of trusted allies. Together, they would venture into the heart of the enchanted forest to uncover the truth behind the Queen’s disappearance.

The first to join was Liana, a cunning thief. She twirled a dagger between her fingers with a grin. “You’ll need me if you want to find anything hidden in that lake. Secrets and treasures alike.”

Next came Balgor, the burly dwarf warrior, hefting a massive warhammer over his shoulder. He let out a low chuckle. “Whatever cursed beasts we find in there, I’ll make sure they regret crossing our path.”

Finally, the enigmatic bard, Vyra, stepped forward. Cloaked in silver-gray, her presence was quiet but commanding. She cradled a lute in her arms and spoke with a soft, almost musical tone. “The true meaning of the prophecy isn’t in the words alone. Sometimes, the story hides in the silence between them.”

The journey through the forest was slow and tense. The deeper they went, the more the air seemed to weigh upon them. The trees whispered as the wind passed through their branches, and the soft ground beneath their feet seemed to pulse with an unnatural rhythm.

“Something’s watching us,” Balgor muttered, his eyes scanning the darkened path.

“It’s the forest itself,” Irivana replied. Her grip on her staff tightened. “The guardians of Darkmoon Lake can sense our presence. They’re waiting.”

As they reached the lake’s edge, a deep, rumbling voice echoed from the water. Slowly, a colossal figure emerged from the dark, swirling surface. Its form was made of shadow and starlight, and its eyes burned like twin suns.

“Mortals,” it intoned, its voice reverberating through the night, “why have you come here?”

Kael stepped forward, his sword drawn. “We seek Queen Eryna. Tell us where she is.”

The figure laughed, a sound that sent shivers through the group. “Your Queen?” it said mockingly. “She was never what you believed. She has not left you, for she has never truly been apart. The betrayer walks among you even now.”

The group exchanged uneasy glances, suspicion and confusion flaring between them.

“What does that mean?” Kael demanded, his voice sharp with urgency. “Who are you talking about?”

The figure’s blazing eyes fixed on Vyra, the bard. Her calm smile didn’t waver.

“Well,” Vyra said softly, setting her lute aside. “It seems the time for secrets is over.”
