Maya woke up with a start, the air cold and sterile. She was no longer in her apartment, no longer surrounded by screens or glowing windows. Instead, she found herself in an all-white room, blindingly bright and disorienting. The walls were smooth and seamless, stretching infinitely in all directions. She wasn’t sure if she was standing, sitting, or floating. Gravity felt optional. Her heart pounded in her chest as she tried to piece together what had happened. The last thing she remembered was falling into the void, the creature’s smile, and those infinite versions of herself clawing at the screens. But here, there was nothing. No sound, no movement, no shadows. Until there was. It began with a ripple in the whiteness, like a drop in an infinite pool. The ripple grew, warping the space around her until a figure emerged, a shadow, pitch black against the stark white, featureless yet familiar. You made it, the shadow said, its voice neither male nor female, neither kind nor cruel. It simply was. Where am I? Maya’s voice was hoarse, her throat raw. You’re where you’ve always been, the shadow replied. That doesn’t make sense, she shouted, the sound swallowed almost immediately by the oppressive silence. None of this makes sense! What do you want from me? The shadow tilted its head, a mimicry of curiosity. We don’t want anything. You do. What does that even mean? Maya took a step forward, her hands clenched into fists. Why are you doing this to me? The shadow rippled again, and suddenly, the whiteness was replaced with scenes from her life, her childhood home, her first job, the night she moved into her apartment. Everything was achingly normal, until it wasn’t. In every memory, there was a flaw. A shadow in the corner. A figure that shouldn’t have been there. Her stomach churned as she saw herself at the laptop again, but this time, the camera angle changed. She was watching herself from behind. Her fingers typed furiously, her face pale and drawn, and on the screen were these very words. Wait, she whispered, stepping closer. What is this? This is the story, the shadow said. Your story. The one you wanted to be told. No, I didn’t ask for this, Maya insisted, shaking her head. I didn’t. The shadow shifted again, taking on her own shape. Now it stood before her as an exact replica, save for its eyes, two hollow voids. Didn’t you? it asked, its voice layered with static and her own. You asked the question. You kept watching. You let it in. The white room dissolved, replaced by the void again, but this time, it was different. The screens were gone, replaced by countless people, all staring at her. Their faces were blank, their eyes fixed on her every move. Maya stumbled back, panic clawing at her chest. Who are they? The shadow smirked, a grotesque mockery of her own smile. They’re the audience. And you? You’re the story now. The crowd began to shift, their blank faces melting into her own features. They were all her. Thousands of versions of her, watching, waiting, expecting something. No, Maya whispered, shaking her head. This isn’t real. None of this is real! Reality doesn’t matter, the shadow said. Only the story does. And they’re waiting for the ending. As the void grew darker, swallowing the crowd, the shadow leaned closer, its hollow eyes piercing into her soul. Will you give them what they want? Or will you keep running? Maya screamed, but this time, the sound didn’t vanish. It echoed, multiplying, until it became the only thing she could hear. Suddenly, she was back in her apartment. Everything was as it had been before the static, before the shadows. The laptop sat on her desk, the screen dark and lifeless. Her phone buzzed beside it. Her heart pounded as she picked it up, the cracked screen displaying a single text: Are you ready to face it? Maya hesitated, her hand trembling. She looked around the room, half-expecting the shadows to return, the breathing to start again. But it was silent. She took a deep breath and typed a single word: Yes. The lights flickered, and the air grew heavy. The laptop screen lit up, showing her reflection once more. This time, it wasn’t smiling. It looked tired, scared, but determined. The reflection spoke, its voice steady. Then it’s time to decide. Will you stay trapped in the lies you’ve built, or will you let it all go? The screen filled with images of her life, every regret, every fear, every path she had refused to take. They swirled around her, overwhelming, crushing. But at the center of it all, there was a door. Maya reached for the screen, her hand trembling. The moment her fingers touched it, everything went black. When she opened her eyes, she was standing in front of the door, its surface smooth and unmarked. Her reflection was beside her now, solid and real. This is your last chance, it said. Step through, and you’ll face the truth. Or stay here, and let the shadows take over. Maya swallowed hard, her heart pounding. She reached for the door handle, her fingers brushing the cold metal. As she turned it, the reflection whispered, We’ll be waiting. The door creaked open, and light poured through, blinding her. She stepped forward, her body trembling, and everything faded to white. What Maya found beyond the door is a question only she can answer. The shadows, the static, the reflections, they were never the enemy. They were her. And now, her story has reached its end.
