The clock in Maya’s apartment clicked louder than usual, each second dragging its heels like a reluctant participant in the quiet, unnerving night. She sat alone at her desk, the glow of her laptop screen casting long, jittery shadows on the walls. The cursor blinked accusingly on her unfinished project, but her mind wasn’t on work. It was on the sound. At first, she thought it was the wind, low, rhythmic, almost imperceptible. But the sound had a pattern, like breathing. Not hers. She held her breath to listen, and it continued, steady and deliberate. It seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere all at once. The apartment, small as it was, suddenly felt vast and full of hidden corners. Maya shook her head, forcing herself to focus. *It’s nothing. Just the building settling.* She told herself the same thing when the static began on her laptop screen. It was subtle at first, a faint flicker that she dismissed as her aging computer struggling to keep up. But then it became more aggressive, sharp bursts of static and distortion that broke through her headphones like tiny electric shocks. She reached to close the laptop, but as her fingers hovered over the lid, she froze. There was something in the static. Not a glitch or a random jumble of pixels. It was an image, faint and grainy, but unmistakable. A figure stood in the darkness on her screen, motionless, indistinct, but watching. Watching *her*. Maya slammed the laptop shut, heart pounding in her chest. She stared at the closed device, half expecting it to spring open on its own, as if the image had burned itself into the screen, into her mind. The sound, the breathing, was louder now. She turned her head toward the living room. The lights were off, save for the faint yellow glow of the streetlamp filtering through the blinds. The air felt heavier, charged with a kind of stillness that wasn’t empty but *full*, like something unseen was holding its breath alongside her. Her phone buzzed on the desk, startling her. A text from an unknown number lit up the screen: **“Stop closing it. Let me in.”** Her blood ran cold. She didn’t remember picking up her phone, but there it was in her hand, the message glaring back at her. Her thumb hovered over the screen, trembling, as if responding would break whatever thin barrier still separated her from… from what? A noise behind her, a faint scraping sound, cut through her thoughts like a blade. She spun around, her chair creaking, and stared into the dim, silent room. Nothing moved. Nothing looked out of place. But the heavy stillness hadn’t lifted. It clung to her, pressed against her chest, daring her to speak, to scream, to run. She didn’t do any of those things. Instead, she whispered, barely loud enough for herself to hear: “…Who’s there?” Silence. And then, faintly, her own voice whispered back from the darkness: “Who’s there?”
