Saving A Soul

Lost in the Afterlife

It was the middle of fall. The leaves were turned as the nights became chilly. Some people were home snuggling with hot cocoa while others with apple cider. It was a perfect night for a scary movie as the moon was full and tomorrow would be Halloween. Others like Richard were up to no good on such a night.

The Eve of Halloween. Richard's (Rich's) favorite time of the year. He would gather with his friends on the block and go out to cause mischief. This year would be no different. He had his own stash of eggs and toilet paper. He also left the house every year with his baseball bat. With these items, he was set for a Hollows eve night.

At around nine O'clock he set out to meet up with friends to get the fun started. They all met up at an abandoned paintball field. Rich of course was the ring leader. "Ok guys. You all brought your own ammo supplies? Let's split into two teams and break". The war was on. It was teams of three and this year Rich froze a few eggs. As they ran around playing egg fight the night grew colder. In the midst of playing Rich used one of his frozen eggs. It missed his target and hit a wooden barrier without breaking. "No fair!" Said Richard's friend as another frozen one smacked him in the head. It looked like he wasn't the only one with frozen eggs that night. As his friend came to consciousness Rich had already prepared the team for their next adventure. They were headed back into town to trash houses they all agreed on with a list. On the way back to town Rich noticed they had passed a cemetery. The perfect plan came to mind and he said "Hey guys, tomorrow we shall begin our night at the cemetery. Does anyone know how to raise the dead? Just kidding but that will be our starting point unless someone is chicken?" With no objections they all rode back to town to finish up their night.

They all had toilet paper and some had eggs left. They went down their list vandalising each home. Rich would get served with some toilet paper and take a hefty swing with his bat at it. It would sail over a lawn or a house. He would then pass it around as he served his friends. Now and then he'd slip in an egg instead as a prank. The last egg he had was frozen. His friend hit the egg towards a house and shattered the second floor window. Everyone dispersed. The night was over. Rich ran as fast as he could to make it home undetected but little did he know, the cops were waiting for him on the other side of a tunnel he used to get home. "Richard, Richard, Richard." Said Officer James as Rich approached him. "You've done it this time boy! Vandalism and destruction of property. Don't even bother turning back. I have cops blocking the entrance of the tunnel if you decide to doubleback." The Officer snatched Rich and viciously placed him in cuffs. "I got the ring leader boys! Let's call to a night!" He shouted. Rich was taken to the station while all his friends escaped that night. The Officer proceeded to question Rich but he would not give any names. He refused to validate his wrong doings to the officer. The police couldn't hold him for the night so they let him go on suspicion. "If I manage to catch you for anything, anytime soon, It'll come with some hefty charges. You hear me Richard? You'll be charged with terms you wouldn't even knew existed." Yelled Officer James as Rich silently walked out the police station and went home.

The next morning arrived and Rich was grateful. He was not sitting in a cell for holloween and he had freedom to do as he pleased for the day. All his friends were free as well. He would have to call them to update on planned schedule for tonight. That evening they all met at Rich's house and rode off together. They started out at the cemetary where Rich had suggested yesterday. They all played a few games of hide and seek tag which took about two hours. They played during the last light of the day into night. While playing Rich noticed a little girl standing by a head stone just staring. She was dead focused at only the head stone and placed all her attention there in an odd manner. Rich and his crew took a break to relax before departing for the rest of the night. Upon leaving the cemetery he approached the little girl and asked "hey what are you doing here standing by yourself?" She responded "I'm just looking at how incorrect I was burried." Rich chuckled nervously as he went to tug on the little girl's arm. He could not get a grip as his hands passed straight through her like no one was standing in her position. Rich turned around, walked about three steps away in order to retreat, then collapsed.

Rich opens his eyes realizing he was on the floor being shaked by one of his friends. "Rich, Rich, wake up! We thought we lost you mein. What happened? You must be dehydrated or something." As he sat up he could see the little girl still staring and in the same location. Ignoring the commotion taking place right beside her, the little girl did not seem phased. Rich stood up and told his friends that he wasn't feeling well. He was about to call it a night and catch up with them at a later date. Shocked that Rich would give up on his favorite day so early his friends escorted him home. After their departure he jumped on his bike and sped towards the cemetery to prove to himself that all this could not be real.

Upon reaching the cemetery he found the little girl at the same spot staring at the same thing. She wore a vintage white dress which had lace on the shoulder and the Vneck area. Her clothes were dirty as if she was in a fight or spilt food on herself while eating. Rich approached the girl but this time in an even more cautious way. "Sooo...what is your name?" He asked. "Briana." Said the girl as she switched her fixed gaze to Rich's eyes for conversation. "They did a horrible job on my burial" she continued. "I don't think I'll ever move on from this spot. It's been so long." She stared to cry. "Don't be upset Briana. It might be different this time. What can I do to help?" Asked Rich. "Help? I've never had help before. That would be great if I knew what to do with it." She started crying again. Rich started brainstorming as he really wanted to help her but didn't know how either. She's looking at her grave and they burried her wrong so maybe she just needs to be burried properly. That was easy enough. "I think I know how to help you." he said. "They obviously burried you wrong so we have to locate your family and have them do it right." Briana looked at him and smiled. Rich picked up his bike and they rode off to town. On the way they exchanged information related to Briana's burial. She did not know who burried her or how she died. All she knows is that she missed her home and her parents whom she seem to know. They reached town and were in front of Rich's house when Briana stopped still and started gazing at his house the same way as she did at the cemetery with her headstone. "Is that your house?" Asked Rich as she nodded with compliance. "Well atleast you get to go in as I currently live there." Said Rich. They both walked in the house together. Both to what was known as home.

They both walked in together and Rich observed her movement as they made their way up to his room. Briana mentioned that the house had changed a lot on the inside and even showed Rich a hidden room inside his bedroom. He jumped on his computer and stared to browse the history of his house. The history revealed that the house had been through numerous owners over the past century. One with the longest holding by the last name of Everwoth. When asked her last name, sure enough it was that. Thinking again to himself Rich had heard that last name come from one of his current neighbors. He immediately dashed out of his room down the stairs and out of the house. He sprinted towards the neighbor's. Shortly after he arrived, Briana showed up behind him. "Where are we?" she asked. "At one of your closest relatives I presume." replied Rich. He walked up to the door, took some candy and knocked. The door screeched open on it's own as Rich cautiously entered with Briana floating quietly behind him. To a distance in the room layed a single swivel chair with someone rocking back and forth. "Come closer!" Said a voice as the person spun around in the chair to face them. It was an old lady. Her looks were that of a witch. She was short, old, white hair and hunched over. The only thing that was missing was he large hat. Rich approached and verified her last name. They spoke for a while to which the woman claimed that Briana was her great, great grand niece. She was kidnapped in her day and her body was never found. At that time there was a serial killer on the loose kidnapping young kids. Rich explained to her that Brian's grave was at the cemetery in town. "Why do you keep looking over your shoulder as if your about to speak to someone else?" asked the lady. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you but Briana is currently here with me that's how I found out your last name. To prove it she use to live at my current house." Explained Rich. Astonishingly shocked the woman asked what her business was. Rich explained how he found her and how they ended up at the house. Still baffled at the situation the lady said that she would escort Rich to the cemetery tomorrow and investigate the situation from there.

Rich looked over to Briana who explained that she has until November 2nd (the day of the dead) to be helped or she'd just become invisible to Rich and roam around until next year. Rich looked at the lady of the house and nodded. The following day arrived and Rich escorted the little old lady to the cemetery. As they approached the headstone they both realized that it stated the death of a boy named Billy. Now it made sense to Rich. The reason Briana said she was burried wrong was because her grave and remains were catered to someone else. Rich and the old woman then went to the police station to report the issue. Upon arriving to the station, Officer James ran out saying "Are you ok Miss Tilda? Rich is a troubled boy. What did he do this time?" "Oh this young man right here is a life saver." She replied. "We need to speak of a dire situation involving serial killings we had years ago officer." She continued. They all proceeded into the station where Officer James started to look over records. After the research was through, it was concluded that Billy was also a victim of the serial killer at that time. Families were contacted and the grave was dug up. The day was November 2nd. Briana hugged Rich as she slowly dissapeared from his sight. Rich looked down at her and smiled as she slowly dissipated into thin air. He knew and felt content that this time her soul would move on instead of the continuous lingering. Forensics came back that the remains were that of a child with a female skull and broad pelvis. With this conclusion, the remains could be burried the right way. Briana's soul was no longer restless and could finally move on to a better place.
