The House Beyond the Fog

nearly a month. Every night, he found himself standing on a narrow dirt road swallowed by thick gray fog. The air was cold and heavy. Somewhere in the distance, a bell rang slowly, its sound echoing through the darkness. Dong. Dong. Dong. Each time he heard it, he felt a strange pull urging him forward. The road always led to the same place—a lonely house standing in the middle of an empty field. The house was old. Its windows were black. Its paint peeled from the walls like dead skin. And every time Ethan approached it, he woke up before reaching the front door. At first, he ignored the dream. Then it began appearing every night. Soon he dreaded going to sleep. The details became sharper each time. He could smell the damp earth. He could hear the creaking of unseen branches. He could even feel the cold wind brushing against his face. The nightmare was becoming real. Or so it seemed. One rainy evening, Ethan fell asleep on his couch while watching television. The dream returned. He stood once again on the foggy road. The bell rang. Dong. Dong. Dong. His feet moved forward. The house emerged from the mist. Closer. Closer. Closer than ever before. This time, something was different. The front door was open. A dim yellow light glowed inside. Ethan's heart pounded. Every instinct told him to run. Yet he stepped toward the doorway. The wooden floor groaned beneath his feet. The air inside smelled of dust and mold. A long hallway stretched before him. Photographs lined the walls. As he walked past them, he noticed something strange. The people in the pictures looked familiar. Very familiar. His chest tightened. The faces belonged to his family. His parents. His grandparents. His younger sister. But the photographs were old—far older than they should have been. As if they had been taken decades ago. At the end of the hallway stood a tall mirror. Something moved inside it. Not a reflection. A figure. A shadow. Ethan froze. The figure slowly stepped closer from the darkness within the glass. Its body was thin. Its limbs unnaturally long. Its face hidden beneath a veil of blackness. Then it spoke. "You finally came." Its voice sounded like dozens of whispers speaking at once. Ethan turned and ran. The hallway seemed endless. The walls stretched farther apart. The floor bent beneath his feet. The photographs began changing. Faces disappeared. Eyes turned black. Mouths widened into horrible smiles. The bell rang again. Louder this time. Dong. Dong. Dong. The house trembled. Doors slammed shut around him. The shadow's footsteps echoed behind him. Slow. Deliberate. Getting closer. Ethan reached a staircase and rushed upward. The second floor was worse. Every room stood open. Inside each room he saw a different version of himself. One was crying. One was screaming. One sat silently staring at a wall. Another lay motionless on a bed. He shut his eyes and kept running. At the end of the corridor stood a single red door. The shadow's footsteps were almost upon him. Without thinking, Ethan threw the door open. Behind it was not a room. It was a forest. Dark trees stretched endlessly beneath a blood-red sky. The moment he stepped through, the door vanished. The forest was silent. Too silent. No birds. No insects. No wind. Only his breathing. Then he noticed hundreds of figures standing between the trees. Watching him. None moved. None blinked. Their faces were hidden. Ethan backed away. One of the figures lifted a hand and pointed. Suddenly every figure pointed at him. The ground shook. A deafening scream erupted from the forest. The figures charged. Ethan ran. Branches clawed at his arms. Roots twisted beneath his feet. The screams grew louder. The shadow appeared ahead of him. Waiting. Its dark face slowly split into a smile. "There is no waking up," it whispered. The forest disappeared. The world collapsed into darkness. Ethan fell. Down. Down. Down. Then everything became silent. For a moment, there was nothing. No sound. No light. No fear. Then he opened his eyes. Relief flooded through him. The nightmare was over. He had finally woken up. But something felt wrong. The room was unfamiliar. The ceiling was wooden. The air smelled of dust and decay. Slowly, Ethan sat up. His blood turned cold. He was lying in an old bed. Inside a dimly lit room. The wallpaper was peeling. The floorboards creaked. Outside the window stretched an empty field covered in fog. And from somewhere below came the sound of a bell. Dong. Dong. Dong. Ethan walked to the window with trembling legs. In the glass, behind his reflection, stood the shadow. Smiling. He was no longer dreaming. He had woken up inside the house.
