'Obsession' Uses a Simple Horror Concept that Will Leave you Completely Terrified

Obsession is hands down one of the best horror films of the year. It's now in my top 3, along with Bone Temple and Hokum. This movie tackled the 'wish going wrong' concept so damn well, and is probably the only horror movie to properly execute this horror concept. I watched this movie with a great audience, and man, everyone was freaking out during so many scenes in the film. The horror presented is done so well, and I could not get over the performance of the two main leads. 

Seriously, the main actress who played the psycho girl deserves a damn Oscar. One of the best horror performances I've ever seen, and she deserves to be put on the list of horror icons in history! 

We follow the story of a young guy named Bear, who makes a wish with an object he purchases from a store, and this instantly goes wrong. He wishes for his childhood friend, Nikki, to fall in love with him, and the wish takes an insane turn that I did predict, but the way everything goes down was total madness, and I loved every second of it!

From the very beginning of the movie, Bear makes it obvious that he has a thing for Nikki.

He tells his friend, Ian, that he has feelings for Nikki, and attempts to practice his confession to a waitress. Ian tells Bear that Nikki wouldn't be into that odd confession, and he gives him advice. He comes home to find his kitty named Sandy, dead. He cries over this loss, in the next scene, he was going through Nikki's Instagram, and he gets a call from her. She invites him to hang out with the main crew of friends, and he refuses, until he hears that Nikki is thinking of quitting her job. 

During the phone call, Nikki ends up dropping a necklace into the toilet. After hearing this, Bear decides to go to the store to buy her a new necklace, but instead, he finds an object known as 'One Wish Willow,' that apparently grants one wish. Bear buys one, and heads out to the hangout. 

Bear shows up to the trivia night at the bar, and we can see his feelings for Nikki, as he watches her during their entire hangout. Another friend of the group named Sarah, shows her obvious crush too, on Bear, but again, he only wants to be with Nikki. After the hangout, Bear offers to take her back home. Nikki and Bear have a heart-to-heart talk, and they eventually arrive to her home. 

Bear attempts to ask her out, but he totally fumbles this confession, and Nikki goes back inside the home. Bear decides to use his wish, to have Nikki fall in love with him. Before Bear leaves, he sees Nikki standing outside of her home, watching him. She then goes over to the car, acting very strange. She is going back and forth with wanting to be with Bear, or she is confused with why she is acting like this. 

Bear decides to go home with Nikki, and the weirdness only continues. Nikki appears to be fighting with herself, as if she doesn't want to be with Bear after all, but there is a part of her that also wants to stay with him. 

Nikki and Bear end up forming a romantic relationship, but not everything is all lovey - dovey.

Nikki and Bear start dating, and their friends Sarah and Ian, notice that it's strange how the two of them are suddenly together. Everything is going well between them, until things start to get weird. Nikki starts to do crazy stuff, such as using Bear's dead cat to get his attention of loving her. She also stands for hours waiting for him in his home, to the point where she soils herself and is covered in vomit. 

And if you think that's already crazy, she also starts to scare him in the middle of the night, by creeping on Bear, or acting like a total psychopath whenever he attempts to even walk away from her. Bear starts to really get scared of her, to the point that he decides to call the phone number for 'One Wish Willow.' The man on the other end tells Bear he can't take back his wish, unless he dies. Then the man asks Bear to listen to Nikki on the phone, and Bear hears her screaming in complete fear. 

He cuts off the phone in a panic, but Bear still refuses to break Nikki out of her spell. 

Things only get worse when they go to a party hosted by Ian. Things go to crap when Nikki starts to act weird, to the point that she is freaking everyone out. Then she suddenly stabs herself with a broken bottle, when the 'real Nikki' is attempting to break free again. Bear and Nikki go back home, but as he asks her to calm down, Nikki goes berserk, scaring Bear once again. 

They both go to sleep that night, and Bear gets a text message from his friend Sarah. She tells him that there is something important she wants to share with him, and he decides to sneak out of bed to go meet with her. Then Nikki calls out to Bear, but he is exposed to the real Nikki. She pleads with him to kill her, hinting that she is indeed trapped in some kind of hell within her own body. Bear refuses to give her mercy, getting upset that she would rather die than stay with him. 

Bear meets up with Sarah, but he ends up signing her death warrant.

Bear meets up with Sarah in the park, inside of her car. She tells him that she recently got her letter from the university, and she wanted to open it with Bear, to see if she got accepted or not. Sarah and Bear had already discussed this dream of Sarah's earlier in the film, really showing what it could have been like if Bear had gotten with Sarah. 

While Sarah and Bear are having a talk, Sarah is about to confess to her obvious crush on Bear, until a shocking jump scare that made so many people jump in the theater occurs. Nikki literally smashes through the car window on Sarah's side, with her head. She then puts a brick on the steering wheel, bashing Sarah's head against the brick over and over, until she is beaten to a complete pulp. 

Bear watches the whole thing in horror, and then Nikki comforts him, telling him that they need to get rid of the body, since it was his fault. A broken Bear helps her dispose of his friend, and then Nikki tells Bear to go home, so that she will take care of everything else. Bear is later seen in his car, and he opens up Sarah's letter. He breaks down after seeing that she got accepted, traumatized after witnessing the death of his friend. 

Bear decides to take matters into his own hands, to see if he can undo the wish.

Bear goes back to the same store where he purchased the 'One Wish Willow,' and buys two more. He goes to his friend Ian, begging him to use his own wish to break Bear from the spell of Nikki. Ian doesn't believe him and uses the stick to wish for a billion dollars. The money comes through the ceiling in front of Bear, who looks devastated before a shocked Ian. 

He runs back to his home to convince Nikki to free him from his wish. He comes across the dead body of Sarah, posed in some kind of shrine. Nikki confronts him with a gun, telling Bear she will end herself if he doesn't confess. Ian walks through the door at that moment to tell Bear he now believes him, but Nikki kills him before he can assess the situation. 

Bear lies with Nikki on the couch, as he tries to convince her that he does love her. Nikki notices a slight head shake from Bear, and is about to break down, but he is able to calm her down. He locks himself in the bathroom, as Nikki has a full break down on the other side, banging on the door. Bear tries to end his life with Nikki's gun, to free Nikki for good, but he chickens out. He then decides to swallow pills, like his cat accidentally did before she died. 

Then there is a snap in the background before Bear chickens out again, to throw up the pills. He walks out of the bathroom, a smile on his face as he looks straight at Nikki. Now in his eyes, he is now obsessed with her, and he goes over to embrace her, as they share a romantic kiss. 

Then the pills take effect, and Bear ends up dying in the arms of Nikki. As she is wailing in sorrow, she picks up the gun to end her life. Then she snaps out of the spell. She addresses the carnage around her, and the film ends with the real Nikki crying in terror.

I loved how the film never held back, and the snippets we got of Nikki attempting to break through the spell or tell Bear that it's not the real her, was so heartbreaking and scary. It really made me view Bear as a total monster, because he was the reason why Nikki got possessed by something unknown, going as far to kill her own friends. 

There is a part of me that wished that Bear never took those pills, because now he would feel the same way that Nikki did, not able to break out of his own spell. They probably would have caused nothing but chaos and death for who knows how long, but it makes sense for Bear to die here. This was his punishment, and it's a massive shame he took his own friends down with him. 

And poor Nikki, was now left with the bodies of all her of friends, most likely aware of what she did, as Bear lies dead at her feet. 

This is a modern horror masterpiece, and this film is going to now take the crown of becoming a cult classic within the horror genre!
