To be honest...

When first reading this competition,, my immediate impulse was to make it creepy. Like, really, really creepy. That’s what Halloween means to me. Watching my favorite horror movies and feeling the tingles run down my spine. Most likely suited for those who want to host a haunted house more so than a party. Regardless, these are the songs that just may keep you up at night.

How should we do this?

Well, I had a plan when creating these playlists. I decided they should match the sequence of a horror film. Instead of diving deep into my ideals of the horror movie, we will dive into the concept of the groups of songs. Listen to a few and come back. I’m sure you’ll be surprised because some of these songs you’ve probably never heard.

Moving beyond films.

Now you can cheat a little. Songs 4 and 8 do not come from the world of film. They come from video games. I am in the generation that was traumatized by horror games. Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Alan Wake, Dark Souls, and so many more. What made these so unique was that unlike a film, you were taking part in a game. That spine tingling sensation was caused a flick of the wrist or a push of the thumb.

Gamers will never forget the first time they heard those awful sounds. The emotions peaking like watching the movie Scream again. Which, despite its satire, has plenty of jump scares that will always surprise you. Which is the feeling we all truly want. Knowing exactly what we should expect and looking for and somehow they get us every time.

It Makes You Feel Alive

The reason we enjoy getting spooked is that it makes us feel alive. All of your senses are heightened. That bush that has been rustling for the last 5 years is now louder than ever. Did it make that sound before? Well, yeah... but it’s pretty cool. You can hear it now. Thus, without further ado, let’s get to know this creepy playlist.

Songs 1 to 5: Enter a Warped World

By Misael Moreno on Unsplash

The first song on this playlist is a mix from the movie US. I Got 5 On It takes a classic and familiar song and perverts it. Lulling you into a false sense of security. Actually, the third song does the same thing because the point is to make you realize things are off now. We’ve crossed over into the Upside Down, where another version of you is waiting to take your place!

Toto, We're Not in Kansas Anymore

Songs 6 - 10: Meet the Monsters

By Donovan Reeves on Unsplash

Now it’s time to meet the monsters. Whether in a movie or a game, we meet the villains’. The forces and creatures that are uncomfortable to look at. Wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for those ominous tones that let us know they mean us harm. It’s time to run and we can’t look back.

Songs 11-15: Escape the Darkness

Well, we won’t have to tools to defeat the monsters yet. We have to escape and regroup. Figure out how to fight back before we rush neck first into danger. Or fall trying!

Companions will be lost. Our heroes might even lose a limb. With that house ahead, we can take a rest. Lick our wounds and find a manual that will undoubtedly tell us how to fight the beast.

Not Out of the Woods Yet

Songs 16-20: The Deeper Story

At last, we finally see that the pages we skipped turned out to be the missing piece of the puzzle. Oh, and that thing we were looking for? It was in our pocket or in the house we started out in all this time.

We took a beating, trying to stop the monster. Everything is lost, but luckily we don’t give up. Of course, the one thing we still have is that book from the beginning. Now, a banged up body, we have nowhere to go and a lot of time on our hands.

It Was Here All Along

Songs 21 - 24: Recognizing the Horror

By Sammy Williams on Unsplash

We thought we understood what we were dealing with. Had made a plan of attack or escape. None of it worked. Our muscle head protector or the wise old sage usually meets their end at this point. Hopefully, it was being too cocky, but odds are they were trying to save us.

It Ends How It Begins

Songs 25-28: The Final Chase

By Frida Bredesen on Unsplash

After all, we’ve been through, now, it’s time. Time to showcase all we’ve learned through this ordeal. No longer short on confidence or motivation. Stepping right up to the doorstep and entering the belly of the beast.

If you’ve made it this far

You are indeed a brave soul. A true horror fan. All that’s left it to share it with your friends. Find out who would be the one that would come back and save you at the end of the movie or sit with you as you finish the game.

Or, if you’re that friend...

Invite them over. Turn out the lights. Press play and see how long they last.
