Who or what is it?

Freddy was never the same after that night. What he saw there stuck in the motel like that, not knowing if he would ever get out with his phone slowly dying in the process with me as his only lifeline to the outside world left. If only I had never jokingly said he is a punk unless he stays there for a night. The way he took up on that so quickly, texting me this video of knives flying around the abandoned motel.

As I thought we would never make it that night when I found him laying there, traumatized forever. I put Freddy into my car to drive off to the hospital, but that smoke.... it kept burning my tires around and floating up to us. I luckily had sage in my car to ward it off, but that didn't stop Freddy from thinking it still had a way of following him around.

Once he sent me the video of him trying to throw an old whiskey bottle at the window so hard it would have to shatter, but all it did was rebound off in a distorted flash of paranormal light is when I knew there was no prank. The cinematic editing skills Freddy would have to have in order to pull off what showed. Sure, invisible strings for flying knifes and fake bugs on the bed, but the way that bottle rebounded off of the window was so wrong and disturbing.

I found him collapsed and choking. The smoke enveloping him. I didn't know what this representation of a spirit was. I called out to it, "Who or what are you?" I asked into the smoke starting to cough myself. A muffled and reverberating voice answered me.

"What? I don't understand," the muffled voice answered again, but louder.

"Enunciation is needed here, not more loudness!" I yelled back and wondered if it's voice was always muffled because it was smoke. Something that covered vision and stung eyes. Caused confusion and loss of breath. Not able to see or breathe clearly so the voice of the thing has the same type of way. I dragged Freddy out of there to my car as I struggled to get to the hospital trying not to get stuck by the thing. Warding off as best I could and finally arriving to save him.

After he was better and he was finally able to speak properly I asked him, "Did you hear it speak? Did it have a voice?"

"Yes, but there was no way to really understand. The words all muffled and blended. One word sounded like another continuously changing it's meaning. Not only was I choking, but I was being mentally smoked," he replied.

When he was fully recovered, life with him did not ever turn back how it was. If ever someone accidently confused Freddy by mispronouncing a word or muffling their voice, he started to have a panic attack. He became afraid of any smoke that came near him for he thought this could once again be whatever the entity was that I myself have started to call the Motel Smoke Screener. He stayed away from any bonfire parties and stayed away when his classmates took smoke breaks. A simple mist in the air from an air freshener was no longer normal, he was from then on at unease and on edge.

I myself wanted to go back and still try to find answers from this entity, but I didn't want it to come with me and hurt Freddy again, plus I was also at risk of ending stuck there like he was especially is I was to go along. I have not gone back yet, but I forever have that nudging in the back of my brain that I should do something about figuring out what really was the Motel Smoke Screener.
