Myrtles Plantation, Louisiana

One of America's most haunted locations is Myrtles Plantation, which General David Bradford built in 1796. At least 12 separate ghosts are said to reside in the mansion, which is said to be situated atop an Indian burial place. There are many legends and ghost stories, such as the one about Chloe, a former slave who had her ear cut off for listening in on a conversation. After taking two of the plantation owner's daughters' lives and poisoning a birthday cake as payback, she was hanged by her fellow slaves. According to reports, Chloe now explores the plantation while hiding her amputated ear with a turban.

Bhangarh Fort, India

The lush ruins of Bhangarh Fort, which are only 100 miles southwest of Delhi, provide an odd contrast to the Rajasthani arid terrain. The oasis has reportedly been cursed ever since a local princess turned down a sorcerer's overtures, leaving it largely abandoned to this day. Former Traveler editor-at-large Hanya Yanagihara suggests worshipping the sun during a session of pre-dusk yoga at the location if you prefer your travels to lean more spiritual than haunted.

Tower of London, England

This unyielding castle, which William the Conqueror built in 1066, has been used for a variety of purposes. Although Henry VIII notoriously gave the order to have two of his wives, Catherine Howard and Anne Boleyn, executed here, it is best known for its brutal past as a jail and execution location. Two young princes were also kept there after their father, King Edward IV, passed away; they vanished shortly after in 1483, and their bodies weren't discovered until 1647. Consequently, there are a lot of ghost stories about the Tower's victims as well as ghost tours of historic royal palaces.

Catacombs of Paris, France

In the spring of 1780, an extended period of severe rain flooded and uncovered the overcrowded Les Innocents cemetery, causing a wave of decaying corpses to tumble onto the next land. This horrific incident, according to Smithsonian Magazine, was the catalyst for a 12-year initiative to transport dead from Paris cemeteries into the city's disused limestone quarries, eventually filling the underground tunnels with about 6 million bodies. Currently, nearly a mile of the underground maze is accessible to guests who may enjoy tours of the tunnels and artistically placed bone displays.

Aokigahara Forest, Japan

This forest near Mount Fuji that appears to be peaceful has a troubled past. During the 1950s, 500 documented suicides have occurred in Aokigahara, sometimes known as "Suicide Forest," according to the BBC. Some attribute this pattern to the forest's link in Japanese mythology with demons. Some mention significant subterranean iron concentrations, which mess with compasses and make it simple to get lost. In order to make it simpler to find their way back out again, many hikers actually mark their trail with tape or string.

Xunantunich, Belize

Xunantunich is a long-abandoned Mayan ruin that is located deep in Belize's rainforests, less than a mile from the Guatemalan border. The first civilisation was destroyed by an earthquake, but the complex was rediscovered in the 1890s by explorers. Since then, Xunantunich has served as a significant archaeological site, a hidden tourist destination, and a hotspot for paranormal encounters. The ghost of a black-haired woman with brilliant red eyes is claimed to haunt the ancient city. Since 1893, when she was originally discovered by one of the earliest study teams, she has frequently been observed close to El Castillo, the complex's tallest edifice. Nobody is certain of the true identity of the so-called "Stone Woman," yet many

Borgvattnet Haunted Vicarage, Sweden

Strange occurrences have been reported at this parsonage, which was first constructed in 1876, since the 1960s. The grey wooden building is now a bed and breakfast in a remote region of northern Sweden with fishing and snowmobiling, but not much else. The proprietors of Borgvattnet will reward you with a certificate stating that you spent the entire night there if you can convince them that you heard footsteps, music, and the sobs of three women.
