Larnach Castle, New Zealand

William Larnach, a famous New Zealand politician, used the lavish house as his home from 1871 and 1887. The most prominent feature is a 3,000 square foot ballroom that Larnach built for his favourite daughter Kate for her 21st birthday. Kate passed away from typhoid at age 26 and is rumoured to still haunt the ballroom. It's not just your imagination if you feel taps on your shoulder and whispers in your ear; paranormal investigators have been to the building and it has appeared on Ghost Hunters International.

Whaley House, San Diego

The first public gallows in San Diego were located here until Thomas Whaley constructed this family house in 1857. Shortly after he moved in, he claimed to have heard "Yankee" Jim Robinson's heavy footsteps. Robinson was a thief and vagrant who was hanged on the property four years before the home was constructed. Tragic deaths and suicides eventually plagued Whaley's family history, many of which took place inside the house. The Whaley House Museum claims that some of the family members are still active there, rushing up the stairs and turning on and off lights.

La Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires

La Recoleta Cemetery, which has tens of thousands of statues, fantastical grottoes, and elaborate gravestones, as well as the remains of Argentina's most famous person, Eva Perón, can move people of all faiths. Recoleta has a few of its own haunted legends, and the stone paths and mausoleum maze are both stunning and unsettling. One of the most well-known tales concerns David Alleno, a former caretaker and gravedigger who spent 30 years working at the cemetery before taking his own life. Others claim that Alleno's ghost still roams the walkways before morning, leaving behind the sound of his keys jingling.

Crumlin Road Gaol, Northern Ireland

One of Northern Ireland's most spooky locations is the Victorian-era Crumlin Road Gaol prison in Belfast. Throughout its 150 years of operation, the jail housed about 25,000 detainees (men, women, and children), publicly executed many of them, and buried their bodies within the prison walls. It has been referred to as Europe's Alcatraz. Even though the facility's doors were formally closed in 1996, legend has it that today's inmates' ghosts are still rumoured to be wandering the iron walkways. You're in luck if this sounds like somewhere you'd like to spend some time because Crumlin Road Gaol offers daily tours, live performances, and moderately priced meals at its on-site (in-prison? Even conferences and weddings can be held there, believe it or not.

Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Canada

This chateau-style hotel in Banff National Park, Canada, is situated charmingly by the Rocky Mountains. It was constructed in 1888 to promote tourism and sell train tickets. Yet as you inside, it becomes slightly more Gothic—and we're not just referring to the design. Several local ghosts, including a bride who allegedly tumbled down the stone staircase at her wedding, have been described by The Calgary Herald. Sam the bellman, who worked at the hotel until 1975 and said he would return to haunt the place, is a less tragic ghost as well. He is said to work shifts helping individuals with their bags before vanishing.

Haw Par Villa, Singapore

Haw Par Villa is a Singaporean theme park from the 1930s that is essentially the antithesis of Disneyland. Once you enter the park, you see that it is covered in more than 1,000 statues, each more bizarre than the previous, despite its colourful entry of Chinese arches appearing to be harmless enough. The Ten Courts of Hell, a collection of dioramas that depict harsh forms of punishment as a way to teach young children about morals, is the place to go if you love all things macabre. The gruesome details of decapitation are frightening enough, but according to Time Out Singapore, "the wax statues depicting condemned souls are reputed to come to life at night, filling the iconic Ten Courts of Hell exhibit with agonised screams." Bring the kids along!
