Live-Reaction Movie Review: Rosa Leigh

Unfiltered reactions to an overly-filtered horror film.

Alright, I am writing this review as I watch Rosa Leigh, so bear with me. Apparently, Rosa Leigh was a troubled child who lied about her teacher putting his hands on her. The teacher found her near the stairs and pushed her down the stairs. The school janitor saw everything and tried to intervene, only to fall over the railing with the teacher. All three died, and the school closed down.

Over the years, paranormal teams tried to investigate there, but the school had a habit of racking up a body count. In the present, another team, led by Andrew, goes in to investigate. Because that sounds like a good idea, right? His girlfriend Brandi thinks so.

So far, the overuse of filter is distracting me from liking the plot or the characters, and some of the dialogue is delivered in a way that is bland and not really believable, as if some of the actors were in dire need of a few acting classes.

Brandi and Andrew then speak with a local who warns them away from the school and says that if they go there, they won't leave. They leave, and Brandi reveals that she already has their other two team members heading toward the school.

Meanwhile, audio and visual filters that are meant to set the mood are totally distracting and overdone. Cut to Brandi in a school room. Cut to a ghost. Cut to the team uniting in front of the building. But hey! They have snacks, so it's all good. Cut to me being distracted by Brandi's VERY low-cut shirt. Cut to Brandi in the grass looking at a baby's photograph and a ghost watching her. Cut to Brandi back in the schoolroom. Oh, there's a nice image of a cross... filtered, of course.

Andrew decides not to tell the two other investigators the whole story of Rosa Leigh, and Brandi begins getting frisky... Yeah, definitely not the right time or place, but okay.

The team looks for places to set up cameras and hear a "creepy clicking sound" near the stairwell. Cut to a scene of a boy stabbing a priest in the abdomen when they see the cross on the wall. Andrew finally tells the others about the deaths . More unnecessary cut scenes all done in the same obnoxious filter.

Andrew finds a doll, which apparently wakes up the whole school. Andrew hits his head on the wall when the doll seems to attack him.

Annnd there's a doll room. No thanks. Why is this one dude smiling while saying they're creepy? No, no smiling.

Cut to ghost girl and ghost teacher and ghost lady... And a hissing sound.

White guy pulls out a Bible to do a protection prayer. I bet that won't piss anything off. Amateurs. *sigh*

Okay, seriously, even Ghost Adventures doesn't have this many cut scenes with filters. Can we just not?

Mr. Smiley (whose real name is Eric, but I'm calling him Mr. Smiley because the guy has serious inappropriate affect) reveals to Brandi and Andrew that they found the doll room and that he twisted a head off one of the dolls. But that's okay because Joe said that protection prayer. That might not have helped him much since Brandi sees something moving behind him on camera.

Mr. Smiley sees Ghost Teacher and is then followed by Ghost Girl. Andrew and Brandi see desks move. Mr. Smiley is still lost, trailed by Ghost Girl but not acting scared enough to run. Joe hears noises and is also visited by Ghost Girl. Joe decides to pray again. Great decision, considering that he then gets attacked.

Brandi and Andrew look for Joe and Mr. Smiley. They find Mr. Smiley after being chased by Ghost Girl and Ghost Lady. They head off to find Joe, but Mr. Smiley only finds Joe's walkie... and Ghost Girl. Brandi and Andrew are attacked by the janitor's ghost, and Brandi dies.

Mr. Smiley sees Ghost Lady and, instead of running away, sits down and lets her attack. He's definitely dead now, leaving Andrew alone with the ghosts. He finds a picture of his grandfather with Rosa Leigh. Then he gets killed when blood spurts from his face. A news team reports. Then, Rosa Leigh puts her doll back on its shelf in the Hell No room.

Ope, look, it's over. Good. I don't even know why I thought this movie might be halfway decent. There is nothing cohesive about the plot, nothing likable about the characters whose relationships and histories are never really developed, and nothing even remotely scary about the ghosts. It feels like a group of friends wanted to make a quickie horror flick on a budget of $2.

I lost some brain cells on this one. The cut scenes, the 'flashbacks', the disjointed noise that is supposed to be the ghosts... It is so schlopped together.

Don't waste your time with this one, folks. 0/5 stars. I can't even be nice and give it one star. I would've been if there wasn't a doll room.
