Follow The Instructions To The Letter
I was languishing in the bath that day with a face mask on when the doorbell screamed obnoxiously through the house. I settled back down and decided to ignore it as I wasn't expected anyone but then it screamed again, and again, and again.

Mat
Jackson was a handsome two-year old tabby house cat who had gotten his name not from a historic or artistic figure, such as Andrew Jackson or Jackson Pollock, but rather from the deceased entertainer Michael Jackson. He had been saddled with this somewhat dubious moniker due to his habit of springing lightly backwards on his toes whenever he was alarmed at something. His mistress invariably found this motion funny and referred to it as “the Jackson moonwalk.” The cat bore this, as he bore other strange terms of affection, with wry tolerance. After all, he was always retreating from danger, wasn’t he, and why did flight from danger amuse humans so?

The Grand Dame
The "adults" never pay attention; they never have and never will. I will always be a child to them, even when I have finally joined their ranks. But today, I don't mind. They're all "too busy", whispering in every corner, ignorant of where I go or what I do. Too busy to notice me sneak up the stairs and slip into the Grand Dame's room to be with the only person that matters right now: Grandma Ilza.

Broken Sanctuary
Xandra awoke at first light, as she had done for so many years. Her house was rotting and void of life, but here she remained. She was always quite lonely as her babies had been taken from her, but she could not leave her home. Her husband had built the house many years ago, but he too left her.

The end is the Beginning
The end is the beginning of a circular story. And for that I am sorry. That was all she read in the little black b0ok that caught her eye at the thrift store before she tucked it in the crook of her elbow and carried on. She needed a blouse for a job interview on Wednesday morning so she continued browsing until she thought she had one that might fit.

The Moleskine Notebook
The Moleskine Notebook By: Latasha Brown CHAPTER ONE What a pulchritudinous morning of Fall it was. I laid stretched out under the soft, blood red sheets in my canopied lair reflecting upon my life. Lord, Covid-19 crippled my life; especially financially. I gazed beyond the partly cracked curtains of my room window into the soft glow of the rising sun. I looked at all the colorful leaves that littered my yard from the trees in my yard. It was my 40th birthday! I long decided that I wasn’t going to spend this birthday alone. No-nonoooo, buddy. But I wanted to do something exciting; something soul invigorating, something dangerous. Oh, my freaking God! I just burst into a conniption of laughter. It was no way that scary old me was feeling so, so – ah, what’s the word – precarious? Whatever the case, I decided that whatever it was that I was going to do, I was going to manipulate a few family members to tag along with my boyfriend and I and I knew exactly who would be down. I climbed out of bed and ambled towards the bathroom to knock out hygienics and right in the middle of me storing my cosmetics back in their respective locations my phone rung…. It was my sister Candice calling to wish me a happy birthday, completely oblivious to the fact that she was one of the individuals I incorporated in my birthday machinations.

Of The Blue And Red Order
“You should’ve taken him to the hospital instead of just calling me Joel” Emanuel said. He was sitting on a chair next to a battered older man laying on the couch whose shirt and pants were ripped from the obvious beating he took. His face was starting to swell and turn black, and Emanuel was having a tough time keeping the cuts on his face closed with just stretch bandages. “I’m going to have to stitch some of these wounds up.”

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
People always warn me of walking alone at night, but it's one of the few moments I feel like myself. All-day situations break you down. You must keep up your fake customer service front, do good things for people who don't deserve it, and pretend you don't hurt when they yell at you. Don't forget to smile at the creepy condescending men so they leave you a tip and won't write a bad Yelp review about you. The night is my solitude so it's the risk I'm willing to take. I rarely, if ever, see a soul anyway.
