An Expedition for Witches
Kira didn’t know much about the history of Explorers’ Recovery, only that it had been constructed a long time ago to prevent expeditions from being lost to the snowy mountainscape. When her father had first come here on a research grant, it had been barely more than a small cabin. Kira only had a distant memory of this because, soon after her arrival, agencies had begun marketing mountain retreats to the wealthy. A developer had bought Explorers’ Recovery and upgraded it from a small outpost to a lavish resort.

The Devil is in the detail
Im so close to something, it’s like I can see it, taste it. But Goddamn it, it’s so far away. If I just had the money to get myself ahead, I could be free. These are all the thoughts that Tom kept swirling in his head while he was walking to his less than accommodating job. Tom spent most of his life dreaming and wishing for something major to happen. It never does. He just keeps wishing and dreaming, and losing hope, each waking moment. This particular morning he was running late and decided to catch the bus rather than walk. Why risk losing a shitty paying job that was keeping him from living on the street? There’s something both mesmerizing and trauma inducing about riding the bus. The mesmerizing part was the people that you encounter on public transportation. The trauma inducing part was the people that you encounter on public transportation. Tom, filled with anxiety, finds a seat, and plops down with so much force. There’s a squish sound. The seat is wet, most likely urine from either a child or a grown man child. He looks under the seat and yells “fuck my life not today”. While looking down he notices a book, it’s covered in the foreign liquid but for some reason Tom is drawn to it.

The Asset
She opened her eyes to realize that the stasis pod had been opened slightly. The gases meant to pacify her were spilling out through the crack and escaping into the air. She ripped off the sensors meant to monitor her brainwaves. She sat up and pushed the lid aside.

The Name Book
The Cool Bean Coffee Company Shop smelled of slightly burnt coffee, over ripe bananas, and latte foam. The clicks and whirs of artisanal coffee creation filled the air and were blended with the chit chat of the mom group sitting on the back corner couches and the ticking of keyboards. It had been a busy morning for a Tuesday and it took all three team members working together to get through the before work crowd. Now that there was a lull, Bethany Ramble grabbed the sanitizer spray and a dishcloth to clean up the few tables deserted by guests before the next wave of patrons came through.

Home
She didn’t do it. No. No. No no no no no no no. No! She hadn’t done anything wrong. Her heart thudded wildly in her chest, drowning out her frantic thoughts, her erratic breathing, the water droplets rhythmically slipping from her fingertips into the tub. It wasn’t her fault. It couldn’t be. The boy had...

Rocky Mountain Locusts
“I command you, my dear Ida, to almighty God, and entrust you to your Creator. May you rest in the arms of the Lord who formed you from the dust of the Earth. May Holy Mary, the Angels and all the Saints welcome you now that you have gone forth from this life. Amen.”

It Was In The Shadows
It was in the shadows that Lilith was happiest. Lilith found the darkness to be her friend. The Money Is Still There
The door slammed in my face, the backdraft tickling the hairs in my beard. It was over, conclusively, Liz’s patience finally having run its course. My heart was broken, shattered; it was all I could do to stop myself from knocking again. I shouldered the small bag of my remaining things that she’d handed me (toiletries mostly) and walked down the driveway.

Red Ruby Seeds
A/N: This story deals heavily in cannibalism as a cultural practice. It also features decapitation and themes of war. The tree stood as the road between heaven and the earth. Its branches grazed the rush of stars overhead and its roots twisted into the rocky soil of the plains. Its rotund trunk and lush foliage spoke of years of survival in this harsh place. Its limbs groaned with dull red fruit, their corpulent bodies split on the ground all around their mother, their wet innards glistening in the moonlight.
