Sacrifices
Part I: Sell Your Soul. “Hello?” she said as I anchored my eyes to hers, pulling them away from the small black leather bound notebook she was furiously scribbling in. It was a sturdy journal with bone-colored paper filled with a flourished cursive script that didn’t look human.

As Blank as Snow
My mother’s food has always been like that, strange. It isn’t that it tastes bad or that she is a terrible cook. It is rather that the food takes a life of its own. Instead of tasting like anything the food creates. It creates feelings that I can never quite place my finger on.

The Pendant in the Notebook
My wife’s cat sat atop the armrest of the couch, lazily basking in the lone lamplight. Silence rang throughout the house, at the exception of my footsteps when I entered the front door. Elizabeth, the blonde angel who is also my wife, was on a work trip. Only the cat and myself would be sleeping in the dwelling for the next week. I wasn’t a huge fan of the cat, which was named Riana, but that wasn’t her fault, merely my distaste for felines in general. She dropped like a smooth marauder onto all fours and scurried into the kitchen as I closed the door behind me.

All the lights are off, blinds pulled down, chairs put up on tables. The staff are extremely ready to go home for the day. They all have their coats on, too.

Come On Down!
Dear Mr. Carey, Look, I get it. I know you’re just the host–an actor, really– and that you probably don’t have anything to do with picking the prizes the contestants win. And, yes, it has occurred to me that you may not even believe in haunted cars. I didn’t used to. But things have been so out of control for me since I came home with her. I’ve tried everything I can think of, but it’s hard to think when you can’t sleep. You’re my last resort, Mr. Carey. Honestly, I have no idea if you can help.

The Djinn
The Djinn Summer storms in South Texas blow in from nowhere and hemorrhage waterfalls. Just as quick, they disappear into the hazy blue yonder. That does a number on sun baked caliche as the runoff percolates and starts to boil lizards and rattlesnakes and scorpions.
