The Forsaken Orbital Lab
By 2230, humanity had expanded orbital research facilities around Earth and Mars. One such lab, Orion-7, suddenly ceased communications while studying subspace anomalies near Jupiter’s orbit. In response, the deep-space vessel Sentinel was dispatched to investigate. The crew of ten included Captain Rhea Voss, engineer Kael Dorr, xenopsychologist Dr. Liora Chen, and several specialists in astrophysics and AI systems.

Molly stared out the window with her pale, freckly cheek resting on her fist, completely lost in her thoughts. Beyond that thick pane of safety glass, acres upon acres of rolling, hilly farmland zipped past. Every now and then, there would be a break in the endless yellow-green fields full of waving cornstalks, yielding room for a little pasture. These tiny patches of dark green were almost always occupied with a few sleepy cows, lounging under wide, shady trees or enjoying a lazy afternoon graze.

A black furry stuffed snake lay on the floor. When the woman finally fell into a deep sleep, the darkness pooled around the embarrassingly cute toy and coalesced into a sinewy form of a snake with taloned hands. Sespral looked at the sleeping woman. Her body was covered with bruises and cuts, some of which still bled unto the sheets below her.
