"Kiss of the Cursed"
"One Life Saved. One Soul Damned."

The diner’s flickering neon sign buzzed faintly. Inside, Stephen wiped down the last table, exhaustion etched into his face. The last customer, a weary traveler, rose from their seat, leaving a few coins behind. Stephen nodded, managing a subtle smile. “Safe travels,” he murmured.
Grabbing his worn jacket, Stephen flipped the CLOSED sign and stepped into the foggy night. The streets were silent, the artificial hum of the planet’s machinery thrumming in the background. As he walked, the thick fog wrapped around him, muffling the world.
A sound stopped him in his tracks—uneven footsteps, a faint groan. A man stumbled out of the fog and collapsed in front of him, wheezing. His body was ravaged by illness, his skin patchy and pale.
“Please… help,” the man croaked. “They said you could save me. You’re the doctor.”
Stephen froze. He’d heard this plea before. They always found him. “I’m not who you think I am,” he muttered. Without another word, he stepped back into the fog and vanished.
Franky, the sick man, clawed at the ground, desperation surging through him. “Wait!” he shouted hoarsely, but Stephen was gone. The air around Franky thickened. Whispers swirled in the mist, forming words. “Follow… the doctor is waiting.”
Staggering forward, Franky followed the whispers to an obsidian doorway glowing faintly in the void. Inside was a sterile, otherworldly room filled with gleaming instruments. Stephen stood at the center, no longer a weary waiter but an authoritative figure in a pristine coat.
“You shouldn’t have come,” Stephen said quietly. “There’s a price for what I do.”
“I don’t care,” Franky rasped. “I’m dying.”
Stephen hesitated, then nodded. The operation began. Time warped as Stephen’s hands worked with supernatural precision, the room glowing with energy. When it was over, Franky opened his eyes. The pain was gone, his body healed. Relief washed over him.
But Stephen’s face was pale. “It’s not over,” he said, his voice trembling. “To seal your healing, you must kiss someone with the same afflictions.”
Franky froze. The weight of the impossible demand sank in. He was the only one who had endured this combination of diseases. “That’s… that’s not fair.”
“The underworld doesn’t deal in fairness,” Stephen replied.
Franky’s mind raced. “What happens if I don’t?”
Stephen looked away. “Your healing will reverse—and it won’t stop with just you. The diseases will spread to others. Families. Communities.”
Franky stumbled into the fog, his fate uncertain. Stephen stood in silence, clutching his jacket.
Stephen jolted awake, sweat dripping down his face. It was a dream—just a twisted figment of his mind. He rubbed his trembling hands, trying to calm himself. But as he glanced down, a faint glow shimmered, fading from his fingertips.
The underworld, it seemed, wasn’t done with him after all.
