Inside Death Road Bolivia: Where Hundreds Died and Spirits Still Roam
Explore the terrifying truth behind accidents, legends, and ghost sightings on North Yungas Road

The legendary Death Road, locally called North Yungas Road, is considered to be one of the deadliest roads in the world. Moreover, Death Road is a place that is full of frightening stories, terrible history, and scary legends. The road goes through the Bolivian mountains and is the scene of numerous fatalities and accidents.
Death Road History
The building of this road started in the 1930s, after Bolivia lost the Chaco War. The construction process involved hundreds of Paraguayan prisoners of war, who had to build the road themselves between La Paz and the Yungas region located in the Amazon Basin.
Since its foundation, Death Road became the source of tragedies and suffering for those who had to travel along it. Its total length makes around 64 kilometers long, which is 3,500 meters descent from high mountain ranges into tropical rainforest. Additionally, there were no guardrails on it; the road was barely three meters wide and was impossible to drive across for several cars simultaneously.
Death Road was the primary route that linked various parts of the region until the 2006 construction of a new highway. It was used to transport goods and people through buses, lorries, and other vehicles. Unfortunately, accidents and injuries caused by its dangers escalated quickly. In the late twentieth century, it was officially classified as the “world’s most dangerous road,” recording about 200 to 300 casualties annually.
Among the worst accidents in history was the one in 1983, which resulted in the death of more than 100 people from a bus falling off the road during accident.
A safer highway was constructed in 2006, which diverted most of the traffic. Currently, Death Road is mostly used for tourism purposes, such as mountain biking.
The second type of stories revolves around vehicles. It is common for drivers to spot headlights in the distance while making sharp turns, but these lights disappear suddenly once one gets closer. Such stories are usually associated with numerous accidents that occurred when cars drove off the edge of steep ravines down into their depths.
The area itself contributes to the eerie atmosphere. Fog descends unpredictably, covering everything around and making it impossible to see anything ahead. The addition of cascading waterfalls into the scene creates a surreal picture with the sound of wind roaring all around. One can easily experience a chill run down the spine.
It’s difficult even for the skeptics not to recognize the power of emotions associated with That place. The knowledge that so many individuals have been killed in the place adds meaning to each step taken there.
A Passage Between Life and Death
Death Road is simultaneously a memorial in the modern age and a horrifying reminder of our fragility. In spite of the road currently attracting many tourists, the past associated with destruction still forms the essence of Death Road.
It may or may not be true that you believe in the presence of spirits in places that have had terrible events occur within them. Whatever your stance, there is no doubt that Death Road exudes fear. For some, the road is exhilarating, while for others, death seems close at hand.
