I Found My Name in a List of the Dead
Everyone on that list is gone… except me.

I wasn’t supposed to see it.
It started like any other night—quiet, heavy, and suffocating. The kind of silence that presses against your ears until you start hearing things that aren’t there. I had stayed late at the office, finishing work no one else wanted to do. By the time I left, the streets were empty, swallowed by darkness.
That’s when I found the paper.
It was lying on the ground near the entrance of my apartment building, slightly crumpled, as if someone had dropped it in a hurry. I don’t know why I picked it up. Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe it was something else.
At first glance, it looked like nothing important. Just a list of names.
But then I noticed something strange.
Every single name had a red line drawn through it.
Every name… except one.
Mine.
I laughed.
Not because it was funny, but because it had to be a joke. A coincidence. My name isn’t exactly rare. There had to be thousands of people with the same name. It didn’t mean anything.
Still… something felt wrong.
The paper felt cold in my hands, unnaturally cold, like it had been sitting in ice. And the ink—it looked fresh. Too fresh.
I folded it quickly and shoved it into my pocket.
“Just forget it,” I muttered to myself as I walked inside.
But I didn’t forget.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the list. The crossed-out names. The red lines. My name sitting there at the bottom, untouched… waiting.
At exactly 3:17 AM, I woke up.
I didn’t know why.
The room was silent, but something felt… off. My phone screen lit up on its own, casting a pale glow across the walls. I reached for it with shaky hands.
No notifications.
But the time—3:17.
For some reason, that made my chest tighten.
Then I heard it.
A faint sound coming from the living room.
A shuffle.
I froze.
I lived alone.
Slowly, I got out of bed and stepped into the hallway. The darkness felt thicker there, like it was alive, watching me.
“Hello?” I called out, my voice barely more than a whisper.
No answer.
I moved forward anyway.
Step by step.
Heart pounding.
And then I saw it.
The paper.
It was lying on the table.
I knew I had put it in my pocket.
But now it was there, perfectly unfolded, as if someone had carefully placed it.
I felt a chill crawl down my spine.
“No…” I whispered.
I didn’t want to look.
But I had to.
I picked it up.
My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold it steady. My eyes scanned the list, moving quickly over the names.
All of them were still crossed out.
All except mine.
But something had changed.
There was a date next to it now.
Tomorrow.
I dropped the paper.
“This isn’t real,” I said out loud, my voice cracking. “This is not real.”
But deep down, I knew it was.
Because I recognized some of the names on that list.
People from my building.
The old man from the third floor who died last week.
The woman who lived across the street—the one they said had a “heart attack.”
Even the kid from the corner shop who disappeared two days ago.
They were all on the list.
And every single one of them…
Was dead.
The next day, I tried to ignore it.
I went to work. I talked to people. I acted normal.
But I couldn’t stop thinking about the date.
Today.
Every second felt heavier than the last.
I checked the time constantly, as if watching it would somehow stop it from moving forward.
But time doesn’t stop.
It never does.
By evening, I couldn’t take it anymore.
I went back to my apartment and locked the door. Then I locked it again. And again.
I closed every window.
Turned on every light.
If something was coming for me, I wasn’t going to make it easy.
Hours passed.
Nothing happened.
I started to feel stupid.
Maybe it really was just a coincidence. A sick joke. My imagination running wild.
I even laughed.
A quiet, nervous laugh.
“See?” I said to myself. “You’re still here.”
Then the lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the room instantly.
My breath caught in my throat.
“No… no, no, no…”
I reached for my phone, fumbling in the dark, my fingers trembling.
3:17 AM.
A sound echoed through the apartment.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Footsteps.
My heart slammed against my chest.
“Who’s there?” I shouted, but my voice sounded small. Weak.
The footsteps didn’t stop.
They got closer.
Closer.
Closer.
Until they were right outside my door.
And then…
Silence.
I held my breath.
Waiting.
Listening.
Praying.
Knock.
It was soft.
Almost polite.
But it felt like a gunshot in the silence.
Knock.
Knock.
Tears filled my eyes.
“Please…” I whispered. “Please go away…”
The handle began to turn.
I backed away slowly, my legs barely holding me up.
The door creaked open.
Just a little.
Just enough.
And in the darkness beyond…
I saw something.
A shape.
Not human.
Not entirely.
Its outline twisted and shifted, like smoke trying to take form.
But the worst part…
Was its face.
It was mine.
I couldn’t move.
Couldn’t breathe.
Couldn’t think.
It stepped inside.
Slowly.
Calmly.
Like it had all the time in the world.
And then I understood.
Everyone on that list…
Wasn’t just dead.
They had been replaced.
The thing smiled.
My smile.
But wrong.
Too wide.
Too empty.
And as it came closer, I realized something even worse.
The name on the list…
Was never meant to be crossed out.
Because I was never meant to survive.
I was meant to be…
Replaced.
The next morning, my neighbors said they saw me leaving the building.
Smiling.
Like nothing had ever happened. 👁️
