On January 26, 2021, Saban Films released Wrong Turn in theatres for a single day. The movie brought in $4.8 million at the box office and $2 million from home sales despite reviewers' mixed to good reviews.

Arriving in a small rural Virginian community to begin their Appalachian Trail journey are Jennifer 'Jen' Shaw, her boyfriend Darius, and couples Adam and Milla and Gary and Luis. In the pub, they run across animosity from the locals, particularly Nate. Along with Edith, a weird woman Jen encounters, there is Ruthie, a young girl who is silent.

They start their walk and, in spite of the warnings, veer off the path to discover an abandoned fort. Gary is crushed to death by a massive tree trunk that rolls down the slope. After getting hurt, confused, and lost, the party makes camp for the night. Milla disappears the next day, along with their cell phones. They come to a plaque with the date "1859" on it, which honours the founding of the "Foundation," a group of pioneers who thought the United States was about to end.

Adam sets off a trap while searching for Milla, getting pulled into a pit. After discovering a barn filled with clothes and backpacks, Jen, Darius, and Luis witness Adam being trussed to a pole and being dragged by two men decked out in bizarre costumes and masks resembling animal skulls. The men, speaking in a language beyond their comprehension, are confronted by the pals. When Adam escapes, he viciously beats one of them to death while the other manages to flee. After escaping the two men during her restroom break, Milla reappears. The friends come across more traps and find themselves encircled by other men in masks. Milla is impaled on stakes after falling into a pit. One of the Foundation members kills her with an arrow. Luis, Adam, Jen, and Darius are all taken prisoner.

The group is brought to the Foundation's headquarters, a makeshift community tucked away in the forest, where they are brought before a judge. Among their hostages is Edith. Testifying on how Adam killed his brother Samuel is Morgan, the brother of the guy Adam killed. Murder is the charge against the group. Adam is given a death sentence by Venable, the leader. In an attempt to spare his life, the others try to lie in court, but other witnesses reveal them as liars, and as a result, they are condemned to "darkness" for lying in court. After escaping, Adam kidnaps Ruthie and demands that his buddies be freed. After stabbing Adam in the leg with a hidden blade, Ruthie executes him in front of his buddies by beating him to death with the same log that killed Samuel.

Venable uses a heated poker to blind Luis as he tries to run away. Jen makes an attempt to curry favour with Venable and other Foundation members. She markets Darius to the group as a desirable professional who can handle the social issues in their closed society. She also makes herself available to anyone as a potential wife and mother of their children, promoting her good genes and lack of a genetic predisposition to cancer—a fact about which she has discovered the Foundation members are terrified. After Venable gives her consent, Darius and she are welcomed into the community. As Venable reveals he has been widowed for more than a year following his wife's death in an accident on a mountain slope, Jen marries him.

Jen's father, Scott Shaw, comes to the town six weeks later in an attempt to find his daughter. To get across the wilderness, he pays a local tracker. When Scott finds the colony, he gets trapped after the tracker and his son are killed by a trap. After getting married to Venable, Jen uses an arrow to shoot her father. Scott is imprisoned and sentenced by Venable to "darkness" for trespassing. Jen lets her father go that evening, confessing that she had simply shot him to allay suspicions. Darius won't go, despite her best efforts to persuade him to flee with her and Scott. Before Venable and the other cultists find them, Ruthie assists them in getting away.

They find a subterranean cell containing Luis and other blinded and disoriented captives. With pity, Jen murders him and escapes with Scott, eliminating multiple cult members, including Edith. When they run into Nate and other armed townspeople, they offer assistance. Jen is hurt by the cultists' onslaught, but Scott and Jen manage to flee.

Jen and her father had resumed their regular lives after a few months. When Jen goes to see her stepmother, she discovers that she is in the middle of introducing Venable and Ruthie to the community. When Jen confronts Venable, he discovers she is carrying his kid. He requests that Jen accompany him back to the Foundation. Jen consents as long as Venable promises never to meddle with her family again. She departs in a camper vehicle with Venable and Ruthie.(VR)

Jen causes the RV to collide with a parked automobile as the closing credits begin to roll. In addition to killing the other cultist, the RV driver, Jen fatally stabs Venable. Then, when they return to her family's house, she holds Ruthie's hand.
