He Texted Me at 3AM. He's Been Dead for 5 Months.

The Last Notification

By AmblusPublished 4 months ago • 3 min read

The notification came at 3:17 AM.

Maya was already awake — she'd been staring at the ceiling for an hour, listening to the kind of silence that feels too heavy to be real. Her phone buzzed once on the nightstand and she reached for it out of habit.

It was a Facebook memory.

*"5 years ago today — Maya and Daniel, forever ❤️"*

She stared at the photo. Daniel's arm around her shoulders. Both of them laughing at something outside the frame. She remembered that day — a Sunday in October, leaves on the ground, coffee going cold in her hand.

She put the phone face down and closed her eyes.

It buzzed again.

She picked it up. Same notification. Same photo. Same timestamp — 3:17 AM — even though it was now 3:19.

*Weird.* She dismissed it and opened her messages app. Maybe she'd text her sister in the morning. She hadn't been sleeping well since the funeral and—

Her phone buzzed a third time.

Not a memory this time. A message. From Daniel.

She sat up so fast her vision went white at the edges.

*Daniel Reeves: hey*

She blinked. Read it again. The name. The profile picture — his face, that familiar half-smile. The timestamp: 3:17 AM.

Her hands were shaking so badly she almost dropped the phone.

Daniel had been dead for five months.

She told herself it was a hacked account. Someone cruel, someone bored, someone who didn't know or didn't care. She'd heard of this happening. It was a cruel, simple explanation and she held onto it with both hands.

Then the next message came.

*Daniel Reeves: i'm outside*

Maya stopped breathing.

She didn't move for a long time. The room felt smaller than it had a moment ago. The silence was different now — not heavy but *held*, like something pressing its ear against the wall to listen.

Her phone buzzed again.

*Daniel Reeves: the door is unlocked maya*

She looked at the bedroom door. The hallway beyond it was dark.

*I locked the front door*, she thought. *I always lock it. I checked it twice.*

She thought about calling 911. She thought about screaming. She thought about pulling the covers over her head like a child and waiting for morning to make everything ordinary again.

Instead, with hands she couldn't feel, she typed back.

*who is this*

The response was immediate.

*Daniel Reeves: you know who this is*

*Daniel Reeves: you've been feeling it for months*

*Daniel Reeves: that feeling that something is still here*

Maya's throat closed.

Because she had. She hadn't told anyone — not her sister, not her therapist, not anyone — but she had felt it. The cold spot by the kitchen window. The mirror she kept finding tilted at a wrong angle. The nights she woke at 3 AM to a room that felt occupied.

She had told herself grief did strange things to the mind.

*Daniel Reeves: come to the hallway*

"No," she whispered out loud. To herself. To the phone. To whatever was on the other end of it.

*Daniel Reeves: maya*

*Daniel Reeves: i just want you to see*

*Daniel Reeves: i'm not what you think*

She stood up. She didn't decide to — her legs just did it, the way they do in dreams when your body moves without permission. She walked to the bedroom door. Put her hand on the frame.

The hallway was dark. Completely dark. But at the end of it, where the front door was—

Light. A thin line of it. Under the door.

The porch light was off. She was certain. She turned it off every night.

Her phone buzzed one last time.

*Daniel Reeves: i've been waiting so long*

The front door opened.

Not slowly. Not dramatically. It simply swung open the way a door opens when someone on the other side turns the handle — casual, familiar, the way Daniel used to come home late and try not to wake her.

The porch light was on.

There was nothing there.

And then the light went out, and something stepped inside, and Maya understood — in the half second before everything went dark — that the feeling she'd been carrying for five months wasn't grief.

It was a warning.

---

*Her phone was found three days later. Still open to the messages. Still showing his name.*

*The last message in the thread was not one she had sent.*

*It read: found her.*
