8 Tips for Staying Safe

Halloween is right around the corner. With that, you can expect trick or treaters to roam around your neighborhood in the evening. While some people may be looking forward to the usual trick or treat adventure, it is important to keep in mind some safety precautions this year (2020). This year is unlike other years. The entire world is trying to operate while staying safe from the coronavirus. Therefore, I’ve laid out several pieces of advice in order to have fun while staying safe this Halloween.

Coronavirus Pandemic related Tips:

1) Social Distance from other people/groups who are trick or treating.

We usually don’t think much about this in normal situations, but it is important to remember this as it is one of several tools we have to protect ourselves during the pandemic. (This also just a good courtesy to uphold for other trick or treaters.)

2) Wear a Face Mask while standing at your neighbor’s front door.

Another way to protect ourselves and those around us from COVID-19 is to wear a face mask over your nose and mouth. When you are receiving candy at someone’s doorstep, it is likely that you’ll be within six feet of someone living in the home. By wearing a face mask, you’re protecting yourself as well as others. In other words, make sure you bring a face mask if you decide to go trick or treating.

General Halloween Tips:

3) Wear shoes that you can walk in.

Trick or Treating involves walking from one house to the next. Therefore, it is important to wear shoes in which you can easily walk long distances. When choosing your costume, make sure that you will still be able to wear shoes that are good for walking.

4) Watch your step when you walk in the neighborhood.

Keep in mind that trick or treating happens in the evening when it is dark out. Without the daylight, it is harder to see everything around you. In addition to your candy bucket, you might also want to bring a flashlight. This will help ensure that you don’t step on any sharp or unwanted objects while walking.

5) Choose a costume in which you can clearly see your surroundings.

When trick or treating out at night, it’s important to be mindful of your surroundings. If you’re wearing a costume that provides limited vision, then you might want to consider a different costume that would allow you to see more easily.

6) Go Trick or Treating in a group.

There’s a saying that there is safety in numbers and it is very much true. When you go out with people who you trust, you can count on them to watch out for you and vice versa. In general, being with a group will help keep you safe.

7) Take only your fair share of candy.

While trick or treating, remember that there are likely other people out trick or treating as well. Therefore, you should be considerate to others and only take a small portion of the candy that is offered.

8) Check all candy wrappers before eating your candy.

While it is highly unlikely that your candy has been tampered with, it is best to inspect each candy wrapper and make sure that the candy hasn’t been opened already. If you received a huge amount of candy, invite someone else you trust to help you look through it all. If the candy wrappers have been opened (even the slightest amount), throw those candies away. If the candy wrappers are unopened, then you can eat those candies.

I hope these safety tips are helpful for you as you plan to go and enjoy trick or treating. Have a happy and safe Halloween.
