Granny Ending Explained: Who Was the Old Woman and Why Did She Kill Rony?

A New Nurse Arrives at Granny’s House

Granny begins with Rony, a young home nurse who is assigned to care for a 75-year-old woman known simply as Granny. She lives alone in an isolated old house and appears friendly when Rony first sees her talking to a plant in the garden.

However, something about her smile immediately makes him uncomfortable. It looks artificial, as though she is pretending to be kind.

Rony introduces himself and explains that his agent, Paul, sent him. Granny welcomes him warmly, saying she has been alone for a week and cannot remain by herself much longer.

Inside the house, Rony notices a photograph of Granny with another young nurse. The man in the picture looks exhausted and frightened. Granny casually explains that he was her previous caretaker, but he became scared and left.

She then gives Rony one strict warning: he may use any room except hers.

That warning becomes the first indication that Granny is hiding something terrible.

Granny’s Strange Daily Routine

Rony soon notices that Granny’s lifestyle makes little sense.

Every evening at exactly 8:00 p.m., the electricity supposedly goes out. Granny sits at the dining table with candles and serves Rony badly prepared food. The rice is wet and sticky, while the curry looks almost inedible.

She claims she has already eaten, but Rony never actually sees her eating.

He also never sees her bathing or changing clothes. She wears the same nightdress every day, speaks to her dog and plants, and disappears into her bedroom during the afternoon.

At night, strange sounds come from her locked room.

Whenever Rony asks about those noises, Granny becomes angry. She tells him to sleep early, never disturb her, keep the windows closed and avoid going outside after she releases the dog.

Her instructions feel less like advice and more like threats.

One stormy night, Rony wakes at 12:30 a.m. and sees Granny walking alone in the garden, smiling in the pouring rain. Terrified, he locks his bedroom door.

Moments later, someone knocks.

Granny’s voice comes from outside, asking whether he is still awake.

Paul Convinces Rony to Stay

Rony finally decides to leave. When he tells Granny, she becomes furious and refuses to pay him for the five days he has worked.

He calls Paul and explains that Granny’s behaviour is disturbing. Paul claims that the other nurses had no serious problems with her and asks Rony to stay for one more week while he arranges another job.

Rony reluctantly agrees.

After learning that he is staying, Granny suddenly becomes affectionate. She laughs with him, speaks gently and behaves more like the harmless old woman she pretended to be when he arrived.

But the change is only another part of her manipulation.

During dinner, Rony tells Granny about his childhood. He explains that he is an orphan from southern India who grew up without parents and faced many struggles.

Strangely, Granny already knows every detail.

When Rony mentions that Paul gave him a different version of what happened to the previous nurses, Granny laughs and says that Paul is “her man.”

Rony finally understands that Paul has been lying to him and deliberately keeping him inside the house.

Granny then tells him that he does not have many days left.

Granny’s Bedtime Story Reveals the Truth

Later that night, Granny finds Rony writing everything in his diary. She makes him lie down and begins telling him a bedtime story about a woman named Rayilamma.

Rayilamma had seven children and an abusive alcoholic husband. Her husband regularly attacked her, while her children eventually stopped respecting her despite everything she had sacrificed for them.

Broken and hopeless, Rayilamma attempted to take her own life.

Before she could die, the Devil appeared and offered her a bargain. He promised that everyone would respect and fear her. In exchange, she had to surrender her husband and children.

Rayilamma accepted.

The Devil consumed her husband and four of her children. However, he left the three youngest children alive—not because he felt sympathy, but because they were too young to understand fear.

The creature could only feed on victims who were genuinely terrified.

As the children grew older, the Devil began frightening them. Once they became consumed by fear, he devoured two more.

Rayilamma managed to save her final child by secretly sending him far away.

Enraged, the Devil possessed Rayilamma’s body and continued hunting innocent people while searching for the missing child.

At the end of the story, Granny points directly at Rony.

He is Rayilamma’s final surviving son.

Why Did Granny Want Rony?

Granny tells Rony that she has not eaten anything and only feeds after midnight. She repeatedly asks whether he is afraid because fear is what makes him suitable for the Devil’s hunger.

This explains everything that happened inside the house.

The strange sounds, the midnight walks, the horrible meals and Granny’s threatening behaviour were all designed to terrify Rony. The demon needed him to become completely afraid before consuming him.

Rony pretends that he wants to share some wine with Granny before leaving. He secretly mixes sleeping pills into her drink.

After Granny falls unconscious, Rony tries to escape. Unfortunately, the main door is locked and the key is missing.

He calls Paul for help.

Paul instructs him to use the back exit and wait inside a nearby outhouse. He promises to arrive with several people.

Rony follows his directions, but when he reaches the building, he discovers blood covering the entrance.

The outhouse is not a safe location. It is the place where previous victims were trapped and killed.

Paul has betrayed him again.

Granny Ending Explained

Exhausted and hopeless, Rony eventually collapses and begins crying.

Granny silently appears behind him. She moves without making any sound, confirming that she is no longer human.

Before Rony can react, she attacks him with an axe and kills him. The demon then consumes his body, finally completing the bargain that began decades earlier.

The ending reveals that Granny was once Rayilamma. However, the real Rayilamma had been dead for a long time. The Devil had simply been using her corpse as a physical vessel.

After eating Rony, black smoke leaves Granny’s body. Her lifeless body collapses because the demon no longer needs it.

Rony was the final child who had escaped the Devil. Once the creature found and consumed him, its unfinished mission was complete.

Paul was also working for the demon. His role was to send vulnerable nurses to Granny’s house and prevent them from leaving. Whenever a caretaker became suspicious, Paul manipulated that person into staying longer or directed them towards the outhouse, where Granny could easily kill them.

Final Thoughts

Granny proves that an effective horror film does not require expensive visual effects or a huge cast.

With only a few characters, an old house and a frightening central mystery, the film creates a deeply unsettling atmosphere. Granny’s unusual habits appear confusing at first, but every detail becomes meaningful after the final revelation.

The most disturbing part of the ending is that Rony never had a real chance to escape. Granny already knew his identity, Paul was secretly helping the demon, and the entire nursing assignment was likely arranged to bring Rayilamma’s final child back to the creature.

Rony thought he had accepted an ordinary home-nursing job.

In reality, he had walked directly into a trap that had been waiting for him since childhood.
