Good Night, Sister

Haunted By The Past

By YAVOR GermanovPublished 2 years ago • 4 min read

It had been two weeks since my mum crushed Timmy with the car. I still remember the sound that his body made when the vehicle crashed into him. And I still see his corpse rolling over the front of the car...

My parents were deeply hurt by what had happened. Dad stopped going to work and my mother stopped cooking delicious dishes. The house was feeling empty without my brother. His room was still filled with his stuff, but it became dark and cold after the crash. It was so creepy that my mother forbade me to go inside it.

I still had to go to school, never mind that I was suffering too. My mum didn’t allow me to stay home even the day after the incident. That upset me even more...

It was late at night and the sun was nowhere to be seen. I was lying in my bed, thinking about the English quiz tomorrow, when I heard a strange noise from the hallway. It sounded like creaking, combined with a very loud footstep sound. This startled me a lot, I didn’t expect it at all. And because I was chicken-hearted, I didn’t bring myself to walk outside to see what was going on.

I tried not to think about it and closed my eyes. But I just couldn’t fall asleep. The test tomorrow, combined with the noise and my brother’s death was too much for me...

After 20 minutes I was still awake, with my eyes open, looking at the ceiling. And then I heard it again-the same scary, loud noise, coming from the hallway. I turned my head towards the door to see if anything or anyone was there.

I saw nothing. Just the door, next to my wardrobe and then my desk. Nothing out of the ordinary. I turned my head again towards the ceiling, watching the darkness and listening to the silence. After a while I started to feel a little bit of anger. Why was I still awake?! Even Timmy was asleep right now...

I got out of the bed, decided to go to the kitchen and drink some warm milk to help me fall asleep. I walked to the door, then slowly opened it. And then I saw... nothing. It was pitch black in the hallway.

I turned on the lights, then slowly walked down the stairs. My eyes were burning from the bright light. I walked into the kitchen where I opened the fridge and grabbed the milk bottle. I sipped some in a glass and put it in the microwave. The platform inside started rotating with the glass on top of it.

Suddenly, the light bulb in the kitchen blinked for a moment. And then again... And again. Then it whistled and burnt out. Now the only light in the house was the microwave light bulb and the lamp upstairs. This scared me and almost made me scream. I’m so glad I didn’t do that, because my mother would walk out of her bedroom and kill me on the spot.

The microwave beeped. The milk was heated and I took it from inside, closed the door, left the kitchen and climbed up the stairs.

I started walking in the hallway, towards my room. And then I saw it. A bright silhouette standing next to my brother’s room. I saw the thing slowly vanish in the wall. I froze in place. I was so shocked that my body wasn’t listening to my brain’s commands. I tried to move, but my legs refused to do anything.

And then the light went out. The darkness... My mind took control over my body once more. And I ran to the door of my room. My hands felt the lock, as I was unable to see anything. Then I opened the door, jumped in my bed and went under the blankets. I didn’t know what that bright figure was, but it was obvious that it was causing the lights to go off.

I waited around two hours under the covers, and then I remembered I didn’t close my door. Now I just couldn’t bring myself to get out of the bed and light up the room. I was too scared.

Suddenly, the creaking noise came again, but not from the hallway, but from my room, next to my ear. I closed my eyes. I knew that it was coming for me...

A few minutes passed. I couldn’t see or hear anything. I seemed to be safe under the blankets...

And then, a bright light appeared above my blanket. Then the thing abruptly pulled the covers on the ground. I felt cold. The shining silhouette leaned over me. It was so bright that it blinded me for a second. But then it went a little darker. And I saw my brother’s face.

I was sitting still, unable to do anything. Slowly, the figure went darker and darker to the point that I was barely seeing it. After that I heard Timmy’s voice, saying “Good, night sister”. The figure vanished; darkness occupied the room. I felt relieved, because everything was over. But the light was gone… It had taken something with it, never to be seen again…
