Meet the Ghosts of Alice and a Former Millworker

The historic Benson Grist Mill, which is tucked away in the shadow of Utah’s Cedar Mountains, is home to a variety of eerie phenomena that go beyond its pioneer beginnings in 1854.

Among the ghostly inhabitants is the ghost of Alice, a little girl who met her watery demise at the grist mill.

Another ghostly spirit is that of a former millworker who keeps laboring.

The Benson Grist Mill was featured in one of the episodes of the TV show “Ghost Adventures” in 2021. In that episode, investigators encountered the mill’s infamous angry male spirit and captured the unsettling presence of an enigmatic red mass.

Two Ghostly Spirits

William C. Stanes, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, constructed the oldest portion of the Devereaux Mansion in 1856. Over the years it changed hands many times before being nearly destroyed by fire in 1979. It has since undergone renovations and reopened as a restaurant and wedding venue. It is also an extremely haunted location.

The first ghostly spirit is that of a little child who particularly enjoys tricking the kitchen staff. At night, her ghostly apparition appears, and she waves to people.

The second ghostly spirit is believed to be a chief housekeeper or the former lady of the house. She is a rather hostile ghost, most likely defending the mansion.

A Laughing Ghost and a Christmas Ghost

Situated in Salt Lake City, the McCune Mansion cost $1 million and took around three years to build in 1901. These days it serves as a site for several occasions, including weddings.

Two distinct ghostly apparitions are seen here and make their presence known. The ghostly spirit of a guy in a black coat and the ghostly spirit of a young girl, about ten years old, enjoy weddings. The child was undoubtedly a past resident of the mansion because a photo is displayed of her. She is frequently seen dancing and laughing, enjoying the weddings along with the guests.

The ghostly spirit of the guy in the black coat usually appears around Christmas.

The Phantom Horseman

Even while old cemeteries are generally unsettling, they become even more so when there are rumors of ghostly activity nearby. This is true at Mercur Cemetery in Tooele, which is reportedly among the state’s most haunted cemeteries. (pictured above)

Visitors have seen dark figures and heard ghostly footsteps. A phantom horseman gallops across the graveyard at night. The other ghostly spirits appear to be children.

Ghostly Spirit of a Little Girl and a Giant Serpent

Moon Lake appears to be a serene and lovely place at first impression. The fact that it is a well-liked campsite is not surprising. But appearances can be deceiving, as this location is among the state’s most haunted.

Campers frequently come upon the ghostly apparition of a little girl, who was drowned in the lake. Her skin is swollen and has a blue tint, and she looks drenched. She appears to be searching for her family and does not fully comprehend that she is dead.

A water-dwelling cryptid that resembles a gigantic serpent is also seen at Moon Lake. Perhaps the distant cousin of the Loch Ness monster in Scotland.

Meet the Purple Lady

There are rumors that “The Purple Lady," a ghostly apparition, haunts the Rio Grande Depot in Salt Lake City. She is through to have perished while pursuing an engagement ring that was tossed into the path of a train. She is also seen in other areas of the depot, like the Ladies Room.

There is also the ghostly spirit of a man who reportedly passed away in the runnel of the depot during construction time and is haunting the basement.

Ghostly Rock Climbers

Provo’s Rock Canyon is a well-known climbing location for seasoned climbers. There have been climbers who have fallen into the canyon below after losing their hold on the steep rock face, resulting in several fatalities.

The nearby campgrounds are thought to be haunted, and these terrible deaths have added to the awful energy in the area.

The most frequent sighting is of a man perched atop one of the tall granite cliffs. He looks down on the living before sprinting down the sheer rock face in their direction at an impossible angle and then disappearing before making contact with the ground.

Musical Ghosts

Situated in Cedar City, the Southern Utah University is allegedly very haunted, and there have been plenty of tales of the paranormal from students and faculty members alike.

The most frequent event is a ghostly pianist who frequently performs “Deep Purple” at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. She apparently died before she could perform the song at her junior prom.

There are rumors of a ghostly spirit named Virginia who plays eerie flute music in Old Main. In 1948, on the 50th anniversary of her passing, she was also accused of setting the building on fire. In death, she was discovered draped over a large chunk of sandstone after being brutally slain. This sandstone was used in the construction of the building, therefore cementing her ghostly connection to it.
