Meet the Bell Witch

Situated in Adams, the Bell Witch Cave includes one of the most famous ghost stories in Tennessee.

The Bell Witch is the malicious ghostly spirit of a very wicked woman named Kate Batts. As the witch, she is known to have murdered John Bell and tormented his family in poltergeist style for several years.

This malicious and angry Bell Witch haunts the Bell Witch Cave next to what was once John Bell’s farm. Around the area, people have seen strange-looking animals, heard the rattling of chains, and unexplained knocking.

Ghostly Apparitions of Confederate Soldiers

The Bethesda Church and Cemetery in Morristown has plenty of restless spirits wandering around. Many of the ghosts are those of Confederate soldiers.

A man walking home past the cemetery and church in the wee hours of the morning saw a Confederate soldier swinging an old-fashioned lantern.

Others have seen Confederate soldiers standing outside of the church just conversing. When these ghostly apparitions notice they have been seen, they walk around the corner of the church and disappear.

The ghost of a woman has been seen crying on the far side of the cemetery, and at nighttime she can be heard weeping.

The Woman Seen as a Green Mist

Situated in Chattanooga, the Greenwood Cemetery is haunted by the ghostly spirit of a murdered woman.

A wealthy woman lived with her husband across the lake. She became wheelchair-bound due to health issues. Instead of offering his help, her husband cheated on her and eventually killed her.

Now on the cemetery ground, the tracks of a wheelchair can be seen. Visitors to the cemetery say the ghost of the woman shows up as a green mist. Others say when she wanders near the lake, she appears to be a shade of green.

A Woman in White and a Black Dog

Gwendolyn’s House in Elizabethton dates back to the 1900s. It is a spooky, haunted place.

Witnesses have seen the ghostly apparition of a black dog running around the house in the hallways and the basement.

There are also sightings of a woman in white who stands by or near the windows of the house.

According to ghost hunters say the when people enter the home a ghostly spirit screams angrily at them.

The Ghost of Rowena and a Large Black Dog

Situated in East Tennessee, the Rotherwood Mansion is almost 200 years old, and its tragic history has made it a haunted place.

The mansion was built by Reverend Frederick Ross. His daughter Rowena had a tragic life. She lost her first love on her wedding day, then lost another love, and finally lost her daughter. Not being able to go on after all that happened, she drowned in the lake in which her first fiancé perished.

Today her ghostly spirit wanders the property in a long flowing white dress. Other ghostly happenings have been the sighting of the ghost of a large black dog who roams about and howls.

The Haunting of the Sheraton Read House Hotel

Situated in Chattanooga, the Sheraton Read House Hotel is one of the most haunted hotels in the state. The historic hotel has offered elegant accommodations since the late 1800s.

The ghostly spirit of Annalisa Netherly haunts room 311. It was in this room that her husband murdered her upon learning that she was having an affair.

In other rooms and places of the hotel, things move around on their own, people see shadows in mirrors, and other guests have seen what appears to be someone reclining on the bed.

Ghosts of the Chandler Family and Spirits of Native Americans

Situated in Sevierville, Wheatland Plantation is one of the most haunted plantations in the US. This location was where battles were fought during the Civil War and the Revolutionary War. On the property are 70 graves of African slaves and a mass grave for about 28 Cherokee Indians.

Among the ghostly spirits that wander the property are members of the Chandler family who once lived here. Ghost hunters have captured sounds of Native American chanting. Ghostly apparitions have been seen all around the plantation.
