The Haunting of the Belvidere Mansion

Built in 1902 in Claremore, the Belvidere Mansion was the home of the Bayless Family. Unfortunately, six months before the mansion was completed, Mr. Bayless died due to a burst appendix. His wife and six children moved into the house and lived there until 1919.

Today, the mansion is haunted by the ghostly spirits of the Bayless family, and it has become one of the most haunted buildings in Oklahoma. Visitors have felt both hot and cold spots throughout the house and heard unexplained noises and disembodied voices. Hazy figures can be seen in the dim light inside the property.

The Ghost of Bob

The Ghostly Spirit of Katy

Situated in Weatherford, around Deer Creek, is a spooky bridge known as the Dead Woman’s Crossing.

Local legend has it that in 1905 a woman named Katy DeWitt James and her baby girl Lulu Belle boarded a train to visit family in Payne County. Having filed for divorce from her abusive husband, her father put her on the train and expected to hear from her when she reached her destination. However, weeks passed with no word from Katy, and her father hired a private detective.

The detective discovered that Katy had befriended a prostitute named Fannie Norton on the train, and she had taken her and the baby to her brother-in-law’s house in Clinton. They visited for a few hours and then took a buggy ride, Fannie returned alone and claimed she knew nothing about Kary and the baby.

The detective found out that the buggy had disappeared into a field near the creek, where it spent around an hour and then came speeding back with blood staining the wheel. Fannie stopped at a nearby farm and gave them the baby wrapped in a bloody dress. Fannie insisted she was not involved, but the same day she poisoned herself, which would indicate guilt.

Now the ghostly spirit of Katy roams the area around Deer Creek looking for her baby daughter and at times called her by name. There are witnesses who say, if you stand under the bridge and keep very still, you can hear wagon wheels rattling above.
