Forgotten Scarecrow

Murderous Rage

A Scarecrow guards our fields, protecting our crops from crows and birds. He is made with such care to be as scary to the birds as possible. His clothes are stuffed to the brim with straw. He is brought in from the fields after harvest, stored in a dry place to be refreshed each spring, and placed back in his spot when the crops are planted.

Have you ever wondered what happens to a Scarecrow who is forgotten and left out in the field in the winter weather? Have you ever wondered what becomes of him having to put up with the sleet and snow? Have you ever wondered what happens to the protector of the crops if he is not valued? Well, let me tell you what happens.

At first, things are okay; the weather starts getting bad in December. Up to the first snowfall, you have plenty of time to remember to winterize your Scarecrow. Even after the first snowfall, you still have a chance. But the second snowfall, you will start noticing changes in your Scarecrow. By the third snowfall, it will be too late. Sleet makes the change happen all the faster.

With each winter storm, the Scarecrow gets darker and darker. With each coat of ice, he gets colder and colder. Until the Scarecrow can take no more, he becomes a murderous being, looking for sacrifices to his god, Lugh.

At first, one sacrifice will suffice. Just one person’s blood soaked the field to bring prosperity and plenty. At first, that is all it will take. But with each passing storm, as I said, he will get worse, darker, and colder.

Each year, he is forgotten, and his murderous rage worsens until he is a psychopath, killing anyone in his reach. Covering his field in rich, red blood, sating his god, Lugh.

He will continue doing so until the ground is intense with rot and nothing grows but swamp plants. Plants that thrive on rotting corpses. Blowflies will multiply faster than anything with the rich food supply that was once a field rich in corn or wheat.

But that will not be enough for the forgotten Scarecrow in a murderous rage. In the name of his ancient god, Lugh, he will destroy and conquer more fields, displacing and dethroning the Scarecrows guarding their crops. Each area he adds to his kingdom will fill with the same rot that his lot is in.

His domain will continue to expand. His power will continue to grow. The darkness in him will completely own him. He will no longer remember what his original purpose was. With each soul he sacrifices to his god, Lugh, he will become a near-unstoppable force.

There is only one way to stop the forgotten Scarecrow when he reaches his murderous rage. Fire. Purifying fire. The fire must happen when he is holed up in his original field, where he goes to perform his sacrifices to his god, Lugh. The fire must be intense enough to burn all the rot away along with the Scarecrow. I suggest that you use fuel and a flamethrower.

Once the scarecrow is burned, his bones (yes, bones, for he will have transformed during his evil reign) must be buried under the new Scarecrow’s stand. This ensures that the new Scarecrow’s magic will protect you from the evil spirit of the forgotten Scarecrow and does not decide to arise and walk again.

You will need to remember to winterize your new Scarecrow. If you do not winterize, you are about as stupid as they come and deserve to go through all this again.

But this is what happens when we forget to winterize our Scarecrows.
