Every Now And 'Glenn' I Fall Apart: Steven Yeun's Glenn Will Haunt Daryl In 'The Walking Dead' Season 8

Casting your mind back to October 2016, AMC's The Walking Dead resolved one of the biggest cliffhangers to grace modern television. In this era of Who Shot Mr. Burns?, why the cast of Lost needed to go back, and is Jon Snow really dead?, #TheWalkingDead kept us guessing for a whole summer about whose brains Negan bashed in with a wire-wrapped baseball bat.

We all know that the unlucky victims were in fact #MichaelCudlitz's Abraham Ford and #StevenYeun's Glenn Rhee. As TWD and its characters move on with their lives, the bloodied specter of Glenn still looms as one of the show's most iconic moments brought to life from #RobertKirkman's comic books. However, as we enter Season 8 of the show, it appears that the ghost of Glenn won't just be haunting the fans of the zombie romp.

Coming From Beyond The Grave

We all saw Season 7 go from bad to worse for one person in particular, and after blaming himself for Glenn's death, Daryl Dixon hit rock bottom amidst a storyline of baggy jumpers and dog food sandwiches. It was anything but "Easy Street" for Norman Reedus, but speaking at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Kirkman promised that Daryl will struggle to cast off what happened to Glenn:

"That will be a plot point for Daryl at some point in the next season. It's something that will be addressed."

Season 7 ended on a slightly more upbeat moment for Daryl, and when reunited with his friends, he found comfort in the arms of Glenn's widow Maggie. We saw a broken Daryl consoled by Maggie at the Hilltop sanctuary, where #LaurenCohan's fearless preggo told Daryl not to blame himself for what happened. However, as Reedus told ComicBook.com, this doesn't seem to be enough:

"I think it weighs heavily on him. I don't know that anybody in that group blames him for anything, but he blames himself more than anything. It really brings him down to a certain level where whatever shitty thing is thrown at him, he is just going to take it."

Return of the Rhee?

Quite how much Glenn will "haunt" Daryl remains to be seen, but could Kirkman's comment also herald the actual return of Yeun to the role he is most famous for? Remember that the previous and current showrunners on TWD have a clichéd habit of deceased actors reprising their roles. Season 3 saw Rick tortured by the souls of those he had lost — including a maligned reappearance of Sarah Wayne Callies — while a fading Tyreese was plagued by his fallen comrades back in Season 5. Even in the Season 7 finale, showrunner #ScottGimple had Cudlitz reprise his role as Ford to wave off Sonequa Martin-Green's tenure as Sasha.

The other option for Glenn's possible return would be during some traumatic birth scene for Maggie. What better time to see the return of Rhee than as his wife gives birth to their only child? Whether or not the actor has moved on to bigger and better things remains to be seen, but with Yeun previously open to the idea of digging up Glenn, keep those peepers peeled in Season 8.
