Every Night, I Wake Up at the Same Time
And every night, something is closer to my bed.

I moved into the house on a quiet evening, just before sunset. It was cheaper than anything else I could find, and the landlord seemed unusually eager to hand over the keys. That should have been my first warning.
The house itself wasn’t particularly strange—just old. The kind of old that creaks when you walk and sighs when the wind presses against it. But there was something else. Something subtle. A feeling that the walls were watching, listening… waiting.
The first night passed without incident. I unpacked a few boxes, ate a cold dinner, and went to bed early. Around midnight, I woke up.
At first, I didn’t know why.
Then I heard it.
A soft creaking sound. Slow. Rhythmic.
I sat up in bed, my heart beating faster as I listened. The sound was coming from somewhere down the hallway. It wasn’t loud, but in the silence of the house, it felt impossible to ignore.
I told myself it was nothing. Just an old house settling.
But deep down, I knew it wasn’t.
The next night, it happened again.
Exactly at midnight.
This time, I was ready. I stayed awake, watching the clock on my bedside table. 11:59.
Then, the second the numbers changed to 12:00… the sound began.
Creeeak.
I stepped out of bed, my feet cold against the wooden floor. The hallway was darker than I remembered, as if the shadows had thickened overnight.
At the end of the hall, I saw it.
A door.
I froze.
I was sure that door hadn’t been there before.
I had walked that hallway dozens of times while moving in. There had been no door at the end. Just a blank wall.
But now it stood there—tall, wooden, slightly open.
And from inside… a faint blue light pulsed softly.
Every instinct told me to turn back.
But curiosity is a powerful thing.
Slowly, I walked toward it.
The creaking sound grew louder with each step, like the door was breathing. Opening… closing… just a fraction.
When I reached it, I hesitated.
The air around the doorway felt colder. Heavier.
I placed my hand on the door.
It was ice cold.
For a moment, I almost pulled away.
But then… I pushed.
The door opened without resistance.
And everything changed.
On the other side wasn’t another room.
It was… somewhere else.
A long corridor stretched out before me, impossibly vast, lined with doors on both sides. Each one identical to the one I had just opened.
The blue light filled the space, casting everything in an unnatural glow.
I stepped inside.
The moment I did, the door behind me slammed shut.
I spun around, panic rising in my chest.
The door was gone.
In its place… just another wall.
“No,” I whispered, my voice echoing strangely.
I tried to stay calm. There had to be a way back. There had to be.
I chose a door at random and opened it.
Inside, I saw… myself.
Sitting in my room. On my bed.
Exactly as I had been just minutes ago.
Watching the clock.
Waiting.
I stumbled back, slamming the door shut.
My mind raced.
Another door. I had to try another.
This time, when I opened it, I saw something different.
A memory.
I was younger. Maybe ten years old. Standing in my childhood home.
But something was wrong.
The shadows were too dark. Too deep.
And then the boy—me—turned his head slowly… and looked directly at me.
His eyes weren’t mine.
They were empty.
I slammed the door shut again, my hands shaking.
Door after door, I opened them.
Each one showed something different.
Moments from my past.
Fragments of my life.
But twisted. Distorted.
And in every single one… something was off.
Something was watching.
I don’t know how long I wandered that corridor.
Time didn’t feel real there.
But eventually… I found it.
A door that looked different.
It wasn’t glowing blue.
It was… dark.
Almost like it absorbed the light around it.
I approached it slowly.
For some reason, I knew.
This was the way out.
Or the way deeper in.
I took a breath… and opened it.
I woke up on the floor of my bedroom.
Gasping.
The morning sunlight poured through the window.
For a moment, I thought it had all been a dream.
But then I saw it.
At the end of the hallway.
The wall.
Empty.
No door.
I stood up slowly, my body trembling.
Everything seemed normal.
Too normal.
I walked to the bathroom and looked in the mirror.
And that’s when I realized…
Something had followed me back.
My reflection… was smiling.
But I wasn’t.
Now, every night, I wake up at midnight.
And every night…
I hear the creaking.
But the door doesn’t appear anymore.
Not in the hallway.
No.
Now…
It’s inside my mind.
And it’s opening wider.
