Still Worth the Effort

Despite the current situation possibly cancelling Halloween this year, it is still worth the effort to dress up in a costume; even if you have to have a virtual get together this holiday. Understandably; many people may be planning on doing this for Halloween, but don’t really want to go to a lot of trouble or effort for essentially; staying home all dressed in a costume. With this in mind, let’s look at some ideas for easy to do costumes for the 2020 Halloween holiday.

The Obvious; The Year 2020

Okay; let us first acknowledge that every third or fourth person will likely have this same idea this year. However; it is worth mentioning that to most people, the scariest thing they can think of; is the year 2020 itself. This could be accomplished as a Halloween costume by simply wearing clothes that have related items attached that would represent the scary things that have taken place. Be mindful of what you choose though; or you may end up in a confrontation with someone who is sensitive about a certain event. Even though you likely won’t be the only person with this as their costume, it is still likely to get a laugh out of your friends and strangers a like. If nothing else; you can laugh with someone else who has decided to be the year 2020 also; and compare how you went about it.

A Floating Head or Floating Anything

If your get together is virtual this year; you can always utilize a green screen and a green screen suit. The suit itself is often not that expensive, and it allows you to make any amount of your body blend in to the background while you are on camera. Simply use software to broadcast yourself to the online event and you can hide any body part. Cover from your neck down and be a floating head. Cover only one arm and use fake blood around the sleeve to make it look like your arm has been ripped or cut off. Get creative.

Digital Twist on a Classic

In a virtual get together; you can pull off some outstanding tricks. Take a photo of the view that others will see on screen; including your chair if you’ll be sitting down. Use a white sheet to create the classic ghost costume. Under the sheet, put on a green screen suit. While broadcasting with your friends, have the photo you took as the background using a green screen, and the sheet on over the chromakey suit. At some point; preferably when someone mentions how boring your costume is or how little effort you put into it, take off the sheet. You will disappear like a real ghost.

Easy Classic Profession-Based Costumes

When you can think of nothing else to dress up as for Halloween, you can always use the old trick of choosing a profession that is easily recognized and go with that. Traditional examples of this are:

  • Doctor
  • Nurse
  • Police Officer
  • …and plenty more

Simply choose one and buy the uniform from a second hand or thrift store. Grab a few accessories to help sell the look, and you’re in business.

Era-Based Costumes

Another time-honored idea is to choose a previous era in time; then simply dress as though you were one of the stereotypical “cool kids” during that time. Dress up as though you are in the 80’s going to a high school party, or someone from the 70’s on your way to the disco. Traditional, but it allows you to play around with your look a lot. This look can also be accomplished by raiding your local thrift store or second-hand store for clothes that can be put together to achieve the look you want. As an added bonus; you can always donate the clothes after Halloween is over.

Most Important

The most important thing to remember is that you should be having fun. Don’t let choosing a costume or deciding on an idea, stress you out. Have fun with it and be creative. The rest will fall into place. Have fun and Happy Halloween, Everyone!
