Don’t Look in the Mirror After Midnight

A reflection can’t move on its own… so why did yours smile first?

By Alyan khanPublished 6 months ago • 3 min read

The first time it happened, I blamed the light.

It was exactly 12:03 AM when I stepped into the bathroom. The house was silent, the kind of silence that presses against your ears until you can hear your own heartbeat. I didn’t turn on the main light—just the dim yellow bulb above the mirror.

I looked up.

And for a second… I froze.

My reflection was smiling.

Not a normal smile. Not the kind you accidentally make. It was slow. Deliberate. Wider than my face could ever stretch.

I wasn’t smiling.

I stumbled back, my breath catching in my throat. When I looked again, it was gone. Just me. Pale, confused… and definitely not smiling.

“Just tired,” I whispered.

But deep down, I knew I hadn’t imagined it.

The second night, I avoided the mirror.

I brushed my teeth looking down, washed my face with my eyes closed, and left as fast as I could. But curiosity is a dangerous thing. It crawls into your mind and scratches until you give in.

So on the third night, I looked again.

12:00 AM.

Nothing.

12:01 AM.

Still nothing.

I leaned closer, studying my reflection carefully. My eyes looked normal. My face was still. No strange movement.

I let out a nervous laugh.

“See? Nothing.”

And then…

My reflection blinked.

I didn’t.

A cold wave rushed through my body. I stepped back, heart pounding so hard it hurt.

“No… no, no, no…”

I raised my hand slowly.

My reflection didn’t move.

Instead, it tilted its head.

Watching me.

Learning me.

And then, just like before—

It smiled.

I stopped sleeping after that.

Every night, I sat in my room, staring at the door, trying to ignore the bathroom down the hall. But it didn’t matter where I went. Mirrors were everywhere.

My phone screen.

The dark TV.

Even the window at night.

Sometimes, I’d catch it.

A delay.

A movement that wasn’t mine.

A smile forming… before I even thought about it.

By the fifth night, I couldn’t take it anymore.

I covered every mirror in the house. Towels, blankets, anything I could find. I even turned my phone face down.

“No reflection, no problem,” I told myself.

That night, for the first time in days, I felt a little peace.

Until I heard the whisper.

“Why are you hiding?”

My eyes snapped open.

The room was dark.

Empty.

But the voice… it sounded like me.

“I’m right here,” it said softly.

I sat up, shaking. “Who’s there?”

A pause.

Then—

“Look at me.”

The bathroom light flickered on by itself.

I stared at the door, every instinct screaming not to move.

But something pulled me. Slowly. Uncontrollably.

Step by step, I walked down the hall.

The bathroom door creaked open.

The mirror was uncovered.

I don’t remember removing the cloth.

But it was gone.

And there I was.

Standing in front of it.

My reflection looked… different.

Its eyes were darker. Deeper. Like something was staring out from inside them.

“Finally,” it said.

Its lips moved.

Not mine.

I tried to scream, but no sound came out.

“You took so long,” it continued, smiling wider than ever. “I’ve been waiting.”

My body felt heavy, frozen in place.

“What… are you?” I managed to whisper.

It leaned closer.

“I’m you.”

The lights flickered.

And suddenly—

I couldn’t move at all.

My reflection raised its hand.

This time, my body copied it.

Not the other way around.

“No…” I gasped.

It laughed softly.

“You’ve been watching me,” it said. “But you never realized… I’ve been learning you.”

Its smile stretched unnaturally wide.

“And now… I’m ready.”

Everything went dark for a moment.

Just a second.

But when the lights came back—

I was still standing in front of the mirror.

Everything looked normal.

My face.

My movements.

Perfect.

But something felt… wrong.

Different.

I turned and walked out of the bathroom.

Each step felt smooth. Controlled. Easy.

Too easy.

In the reflection behind me…

Something stayed.

Watching.

Smiling.

They say I’ve been acting strange lately.

That I don’t blink as much.

That my smile feels… off.

Too wide.

Too slow.

Too real.

But I don’t see it.

I feel fine.

Better than fine.

Sometimes, late at night, I walk past mirrors.

And for a split second…

I see someone inside them.

Trapped.

Pounding.

Screaming.

Trying to get out.

They look exactly like me.

So here’s my advice.

If it’s past midnight…

And you feel the urge to check your reflection—

Don’t.

Because if it smiles before you do…

It’s already too late.
