The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It was a normal looking candle, with a flame glowing bright in the darkness. The townsfolk were confused about this development. Had someone taken up shelter there?

The police went out to the cabin during the day, but there was no sign of anyone having spent the night. After a few nights of the candle existing people began to be accustomed to the glow off in the distance.

The cabin was only a few hundred feet or so into the woods so many could still see it during the day, and the glow stood out on very dark nights. The flickering light casted shadows that seemed to be spirits dancing to the winds howls.

At first many in the town turned to God, as they were very religious people, and this was to them a sign the devil and sin was becoming a problem. Others just said someone was playing a prank. After the first couple weeks the folk of Lumbee had decided it was just a part of the cabin. But the new moon brought a change in the flame.

It became a green hue, very pale but still greenish. The pale green colored the woods, and the people noticed this. The police officer that first examined the scene went back out there that night, hoping to catch the person responsible for this candle.

When morning came, the dew created a sparkling light show, and the air was cool and crisp. The sheriff was told that the officer had not returned from the cabin the night prior. That day he drove out, but thirty yards from the cabin he stopped.

High in the trees the officer was found, dead. His body was carved up and mutilated to be in such a way he almost resembled an angel. The back was flayed open, the bones pulled apart and skin stretched. Worse was his face, where an upside-down cross was carved into his forehead, and his mouth and eyes were sewn shut. Blood from the corpse was nowhere under him, as if these modifications happened after he was bled somehow.

The sheriff rushed back and a whole team was sent out to investigate, yet nothing was concluded. That night the flame was normal again.

After a few nights, the flame turned that pale green again. A man who was a store manager lived near the woods, and he saw the eerie glow. He stayed in his home, hoping that the problem was just in the woods. Soon though, that changed.

He began to hear grumbling in the woods. The grumbling to growls, then back to grumbles. After an hour the man heard whispering, from what sounded to be many people coming out of the light.

He decided to leave his home to see if he could at the very least see those responsible.

Once he got close enough to see the cabin, the noise all stopped. It was dead silent.

The next morning a hunter was out at daybreak, and he saw the cabin on his way out. At the cabin was a terrible scene. The man who went out was found, body mutilated as the officer before, but his body was on a pike only ten feet from the cabin.

The sheriff and his investigators came out and looked around. But again, they found nothing.

The hunter decided to act. When the police left the hunter looked up the trail just a little bit. He found a good site and put up a tree cam facing the cabin.

That night he stayed up and watched his cam footage in the den of his house. For hours he sat there and stared at a normal abandoned cabin. Suddenly the flame went green again. The door into the cabin was closed.

A swift motion was noticed on the cam footage, and at first the hunter thought it just a bird flying past. Then it sped past, going the opposite direction. He thought it was odd. Nothing normally moves in such a manner.

After waiting another minute there was more swift movement. It went towards the cabin; the door being thrown open. And then something that looked like eyes peered out the doorway.

The hunter was fixated on the screen, showing what was happening just a few hundred yards for so away. The hunter then saw a few more pairs of eyes appear in the doorway. Slowly a shadowy hand creeped forward and grabbed the left of the doorframe. After that a second crept out the other side. They latched onto the cabin as a foot appeared too.

The hunter sat there in disbelief. Had he really just caught what looked to be a ghost, clearly like a shad, appear in the feed? Well after a few seconds the creature, all misty and hazy, slightly tilted its head as it stared at the tree cam.

The hunter held his breath, wondering if the creature could tell what was in front of it. The green light made the eeriness of the shade all the creepier to this man.

As suddenly as they darted into the cabin, this one left. It left going away from town, so the hunter sighed and chuckled at his worry. He drifted to sleep in his recliner, down in his den.

The next day police were at his house, and his wife was in tears. Their son was sitting on the front porch in silence as his mom described what she saw.

The hunter was found that morning in the den, nailed to the ceiling with his body just like the others. His back was cut and torn open, the bones and skin made to look like an angel. His face had an upside down cross in it. he was pointed towards the stairs, as to be the first thing you saw when you go down. Worse of all his eyes were different from the officers. They were melted out of his skull.

The wife had told the police she heard of the other two, but they ventured into the woods. This time the creature had attacked in town.

Because of this problem the hunter’s son decided he was going into the woods, that day, and destroying the green flamed candle and ending what had become known in town as demon attacks. Many called the victims those turned into angels of hell, but to the town folk, after an attack in town their lives we rebecoming hell itself.

That afternoon, just after he had eaten a sandwich, the son left with a sledgehammer. He walked out and reached the cabin quickly. He saw the edge of town through the trees, but just barely.

He took his sledgehammer and smashed not the cabin. His swing broke a hole into the wall as the old wood gave easily to his powerful swing. Then he swung again, this time breaking a hinge for the door.

He saw the candle through a window, and he lifted the sledgehammer high above his head. Tears formed in eyes, and with a loud crash and a mighty thud he broke the glass and smashed the candle.

He turned around and started to walk away. He was certain he stopped what has been harassing the town. But he was wrong.

A misty tentacle shot out of the cabin’s broken door and grabbed the teen around his waist. He yelled for help. And then he was taken into the cabin.

The teen’s mother called the police again that night, but they found nothing. The next day an officer noticed the cabin was broken, and the candle was just sitting on the table like normal.

After a week with no leads the police called off the search for the woman’s son. The town fenced off the area around the cabin, ad put up many warnings. Within a month the woman was buried beside her husband.

Even today the town sees the green flame light flickering in that cabin. Every night without a moon it occurs, and every one of those nights no one leaves their homes. They stay away from whatever lurks in their backyard.
