He’s baaaaaack…

The Syfy channel and USA Network just released their latest teaser trailer for the forthcoming TV series, Chucky, which follows the killer doll from the Child's Play franchise. The teaser itself, which depicts Chucky in a toy store, is brief, but it does provide fans with a sense that the franchise may be returning to its roots.

2019 Cinematic Reboot

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer owns the rights to the first Child's Play film, while the rights to the sequels are owned by Universal. As such, MGM was able to develop its own remake of Child's Play without the involvement of franchise creator Don Mancini. This was met with criticism from fans of the original continuity, as well as from Mancini himself. Cult of Chucky had just come out in 2017, and Mancini was developing a TV series follow-up to Cult of Chucky. Given the title of MGM's remake, it makes sense that Mancini would call the TV series Chucky rather than Child's Play in order to avoid market confusion.

MGM's 2019 remake updated the mythos for the modern era. The murderous doll was now an AI tied to the Internet of Things. With Chucky actor Brad Dourif being loyal to Mancini's series, the Chucky of the remake was voiced by Mark Hamill. Reviews of this remake were mixed, with even a few critics actually enjoying the updates that were made.

Perversely opening the same night as Toy Story 4, the film finished second behind those other, kinder toys. Child’s Play (2019) made $14.1 million in its debut. The movie went on to gross $45 million worldwide against a budget of $10 million. Producer Seth Grahame-Smith and Director Lars Klevberg both showed a keen interest in making a sequel for their rebooted vision. Despite the decent box office returns, there are no known plans for a sequel.

TV Series

The new venture is a TV show which takes place after the original movies. Those who have seen Cult of Chucky may remember that Chucky found a way to transfer his soul into multiple dolls, leading to an ending presented multiple possibilities for directions in which to take the series. In the medium of television, perhaps multiple avenues can be explored.

As the tagline says, the show is about an evil so great that it could not be contained to just one network. It remains to be seen or understood how the airing of this show will be split between the two television networks.

The series is being developed with the original Child’s Play creator, Don Mancini. Also reportedly returning is the original Chucky actor Brad Dourif.

The show was initially scheduled for release in 2020. Much like many other projects this year, it has been postponed due to the pandemic, as well. The teaser trailer updates the release date to 2021.

Syfy’s Premise

After a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies and allies from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.

The mention of enemies and allies from the past is an intriguing detail. Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky saw the return of a few familiar faces, including Chucky's longtime nemesis Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) and Bride of Chucky herself Tiffany Valentine (Jennifer Tilly). Last we saw of her, she was traveling with a Chucky-possessed Nica Pierce (portrayed by Brad Dourif's daughter Fiona Dourif). A post-credit scene in Cult of Chucky even brought back Kyle (Christine Elise), who was Andy's foster sister in Child's Play 2. Whether any of these are the familiar allies and enemies is yet to be seen. Some fans may even be wondering whether we may see the return of Glen and Glenda from Seed of Chucky. With Don Mancini at the helm, this show may do just enough to satiate the long-time fans.
