Blood Lines

Dead Air

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished 13 days ago • 3 min read

She slowly crept down the stairwell

Plastic bags on bare feet.

The lightbulbs were knocked out

Making it harder to see

He was tied up in the cellar

The man that made her heart bleed

"Payback's a bitch," she said, smiling

As he started to plead

...

"There is no rest for the wicked

And that's just what you are.

I'm making this simple

We've had our fair share of hard.

You see, the devil's the dealer

And he dealt us these cards

They say time is a healer..."

("But, I can't wait that long")

She loosened the gag

And asked if he had any last words

He cried, "come on, Jen"

The swelling made his words slur

"You know, you're not a killer

You could just let me go."

It all sounded familiar

When he said promised, "no one has to know."

She thought for a moment

As she laid out the tarp

She didn't flinch, as a rodent

Crawled down the wall and onto his arm

He started to scream

As it nibbled his ear

"Babe, listen to me, Please...

Let me out of here!

You can start over

I will leave you alone."

She was thinking it over

When a ring lit up the phone

They looked at each other

And then, back at the phone

She started to shiver

When a voice said, "Jenny, you're not alone."

"We know what you've been through

And his life don't matter to us

But there's something we need from you

Something we need to discuss."

"When the phone buzzes, answer

I'm sending something you need to see."

It was a picture of her father

And of her, when she was three

Standing over her mother

With blood on his hands

But this was her father

She didn't understand

*

"What is this, who are you

How did you know where to find me"

Only silence came through

And then again, finally

The voice simply repeated...

"Jenny, you're not alone

We have no way to meet

so, don't wander far from this phone."

*
She felt sick to her stomach

So she sat down for a spell

They'd never caught who done it

There was no way to tell

*

And then another one came through

Her father burying a body

She couldn't believe it was true

Her mind started getting foggy

"They're comin' to get you, Jenny,"

Jimmy taunted, "you'd better run fast..

I know you don't trust me

This chance just might be your last.

Cut these ropes and release me

I promise that I'll have your back.

Before that phone starts to ring..."

"Come on, Jen...you're under attack."

She stared at those pictures

Another lifetime ago

Then the lights started to flicker

And noises rose from the phone

Not a ring or a buzz

Something that sounded unholy

She didn't know what it was

So she approached the stand slowly

A heartbeat came through the speaker

Followed by a low growl

She felt something pass through her

Something evil on the prowl

A voice on the receiver said;

"Don't move, you'll be fine

But there's something in your head

Runnin' through your bloodline

You can finish what you started

But as soon as you do

You will be morally sordid

And we will own all of you

See, your dad was the goat..."

What he said next, had her hands shaking

"Go ahead, cut his throat...."

"You're a killer in the making"

She looked back at that photo

Both were covered in blood

The voice said, “we know you didn’t know

All the vile things he’s done “

But he started to get greedy

And wouldn’t obey our commands

Your his first born seed and

More organized than a man”

......

"In the next room, by the furnace

We buried his body with care

If you don't do what we ask

You will be joining him there."

....

"We didn't want this to get messy

And You've got Jimmy on queue

Your bloodline is confessing

You're could be a serial killer too.

Besides, when the police find his body

And Jimmy tied to that stool

It won't take a psychic to see

That they will pin it on you,"

She tore out of there running

And vowed she would never look back

She didn't like what she was becoming

And disappeared, just like that

*

The police found ol' Jimmy

Still alive and tied to that pole

But they never found Jenny

Just that disconnected old phone
