Belvoir Winery and Inn

Four friends. One winery. An endless night of misery.

12 hours earlier:

The beastly F-150 roars at high speeds and high intervals (all hail AC/DC) on the flat Midwest roads as the driver fights to find a destination- any destination- that's as wicked and wild as him and his pals.

"Come on you guys, what are we gonna do?!" Jack exclaims as he's obviously losing patience. After all, the driver's gotta know where he's gettin' to.

Adam and Ashley in the back couldn't be more disinterested in Jack as the only thing they've been interested in since leaving IHOP is licking the pancake syrup off the other's chin.

Jack can see the show in his rear view mirror and can tell from the purple plaguing Ashley's lips that curtain call won't be happening anytime soon. So with this knowledge, Jack looks to his right for his only hope in terms of navigation: Carrie.

With a sheepish grin, Carrie reaches over and lightly grabs her lover's knee. This is her signal to him that she's got this- soon they'll be on track toward a destination.

This is why Jack loves her. She's always got a handle on everything and she's also the only one who can bring him down from his spontaneous bouts of rage or frustration and sometimes, prohibit them altogether.

Whipping out her phone, Google is her godsend. She types in the search bar simply: fun things to do near me.

Naturally, an abundance of possibilities appear on her screen. She lists them out loud so that Jack can help her decide. She's fairly certain the sex bots in back aren't listening- but oh well, it's their funeral.

"Zoo."

"Mall."

"National park."

"Hiking trail."

"Winery."

"Wait." Jack intercedes. "Winery! That sounds cool. It's outside... we can drink..."

Carrie smirks and agrees with Jack that a winery sounds like the best option.

"Let's do it! I think I'm gonna have to be drunk to make it the rest of the day with these two," she says as she motions toward the back seat.

"Cool, cool. Where exactly are we going and how far is it?" Jack asks.

"Looks like it's called Belvoir Winery and it's in Liberty, MO which isss just 30 minutes away!" Exclaims Carrie. "Oh, and it looks like it's also an Inn! If they have available rooms maybe we should stay the night!"

Jack nods his head in agreement and proceeds to follow the route on his GPS.

Carrie is just about to turn up AC/DC when Ashley peeks her head up in the front seat perkily asking what the plan is. Carrie responds with winery and Ashley lets out a shrill and then falls into Adam's arms, which apparently is Ashley for yeah, let's do it.

Finally, they arrive at Belvoir Winery and Inn. Everyone piles out and boy, is it a sight to see. From driving in, it looked like the property was about 200 acres. Now that they're parked and walking up toward the winery, they notice that there's a couple different buildings, but only the one building is actually in use. Odd...

As Carrie is walking, she can't help but wonder why the other buildings around look almost condemned...

The four of them enter the foyer and are immediately greeted by a tall, middle-aged, slightly balding fellow with a very cheerful demeanor.

"Hello and welcome to Belvoir Winery and Inn! I'm Jared, the activities director; what brings you folks in today?"

They all look at each other as if there's an elephant in the room because this guy Jared is as bubbly in personality as he is cheerful in vague disposition.

Adam, being the jerk that he is, responds to Jared in a mocking manner. He elevates his voice a decimal and flails his arms femininely: "Oh we're just here looking to try some of your lovely wine and probably costly accommodations."

Ashley chuckles and playfully punches him in the arm.

Jared politely disregards Adam's mocking behavior- perhaps he was even oblivious to it- and proceeds to walk us past the front desk and towards the wine tasting hall.

The hall is draped with beautiful tapestry- it's the first thing you notice when you walk in. The only other word to describe the hall is historical.

Before Jared leaves, Carrie asks in what time period the building was built. Jared responds with Jacobean- Revival style and Carrie just gushes in awe. For someone who spends all of her free time shopping in antique malls, this is Heaven for her. It's this moment when she is pleased with her choice of destination.

"Let's get drunk!" Adam screams out, getting everybody else hyped up.

The attendant- can't be any older than 17- prepares their flights of four tastings each: 2 red, 2 white.

The boys are eager to receive their flights, already betting on who's gonna lose the chugging contest.

Carrie bows her head and shakes it in embarrassment as they are at a five star Inn and Winery- not a brewing company. A concept that the boys can't seem to grasp or maybe don't care to.

As they're ordering another round of flights, they overhear a nearby couple say that they can't believe a place this nice could possibly be haunted.

This is a statement that grabs everyone's attention. Carrie and Ashley look at each other with wide eyes and the guys shut up about the recent football game and high five each other.

Jack looks at the attendant and practically begs for more information.

The kid seems a little turned off at first, but then informs the group that the winery once was a home for orphaned children and elderly patients called The Odd Fellows Home.

It all starts to make sense as the road they turned on to get to the Winery was called Odd Fellows Road...

They stare at the kid in awe. Now the kid just spills the tea...

"Yeah, I know. Apparently it was a secret society called the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. And check it out- one of the buildings burned down in the early 1900's and it's rumored that there were even people trapped inside. There's even a cemetery out back and the old buildings are still back there, too."

Everyone is so excited by this news, but Carrie is a little turned off...

"Carrie, are you alright, girl??" Ashley asks between shrills (that must be her thing now).

The attendant whips around real quick, "Carrie?!"

"Yeah...," Carrie responds.

"Man that's so crazy. One of the girls that allegedly died in the fire- her name was Carrie!"

"What, that's so cool!" Exclaims both the boys.

Sufficiently wine-drunk, they all thank the attendant for the service (but mostly for the information) and the attendant couldn't have been happier to assist.

He thinks to himself, 'they were so fun to serve- unlike the pretentious marrieds whom he always has to 'be seen, but never heard from.'

After an eventful day spent chugging wine, it's almost dusk and no one is in shape to drive. Jack recommends that they get a couple rooms for the night and then go explore the grounds once they get all checked in.

Carrie, after hearing how the friggin place is haunted, is not too keen on this plan... but Jack's right- none of them are in any shape to drive. What choice does she really have?

"2 rooms please." Jack asks the front desk attendant.

"Oh you're in luck- we have exactly two left." The front desk attendant responded in an almost chilling manner...

Carrie was busy examining the lobby and it's architecture when she hears distant laughter and footsteps...

She looks around but doesn't see any families with kids.. just couples and groups of adults.

But there it is again! But louder this time...

Now Carrie is frantically looking around trying to find the source of her craziness when Jared appears behind her.

Carrie whips around and lets out a little shriek. "Jared, you scared me!"

"I'm sorry, Miss. Carrie. I was wondering if I could help you- you seem lost."

"No, I'm just waiting for my boyfriend to check us in, but while you're here, are there any kids here? I keep hearing kids laughing and running..."

Jared looks at Carrie with a blank gaze. He leans into her and says, "Miss. Carrie, you've probably heard already what this place used to be... correct?"

Carrie nods her head slowly.

"Yes, well... what your hearing are guests from... that time."

With that, Jared was gone. Still cheerful, only a touch more serious.

Carrie can read between the lines. But she just can't believe it. She paces quickly over to Jack.

"Hey babe, I got the room!" He says excitedly. Carrie grabs his hand and she's white as a sheet.

"Babe, what's wrong?"

"I just heard ghosts- little girls laughing and running! Jared even confirmed it when I saw him a minute ago." She says frantically.

"Babe, it's probably just your imagination. You've been told this place is possibly haunted and now your mind is playing tricks on you." Jack says this in an effort to calm his anxiety ridden girlfriend, but it's not working real well.

"Fine. Don't believe me. Let's just go to the room."

They get up to their room and it's a super nice room... Looks like the Ritz-Carlton! But that still doesn't put Carrie's mind at ease. Especially when she sees a leather bound book on a table near the door.

She and Jack approach the table with a mind to call down to the front desk thinking this is a previous guest's book, but when they open it they find that it's not that at all...

"August 3rd, August 15th, September 6th, October 11th..."

Carrie and Jack flip through the entries and they quickly find out that this book is filled with documented accounts of hauntings that have happened to guests in this room.

Jack thinks this is the coolest thing he's ever seen, but Carrie is calling down to the front desk. The attendant answers and Carrie just goes off about the book. The attendant explains that the room is perfectly safe, but the Inn does have the occasional account of a spirit sighting or apparition.

Carrie hangs up the phone not feeling very assured. Within minutes, however, Adam and Ashley burst in the room talking about the totally awesome book they just found in their room.

"Guys, lets totally go check out that cemetery that kid was telling us about!"

Carrie can tell he's already taken tequila from the mini bar. All three of them are already almost out the door. Carrie really doesn't want to go, but after seeing that book, she sure as hell doesn't want to stay in the room alone.

"Alright, let's go." Carrie says reluctantly. Jack grabs her hand and pulls her into his waist. "It's gonna be find babe, you'll see." He says as he kisses her on the head.

As they make their way to the vacant, run down buildings, Carrie can tell that the ground hasn't been kept up at all. Adam and Ashley are about 10 paces ahead of her and Jack and Carrie is fighting to stay in stride with Jack, but the ground isn't making it easy.

As she steps down with the vacant buildings in sight, she begins to get a little excited when she trips and falls forward on her knee. She gasps in pain as Jack kneels down next to her.

"Oh no babe, are you alright??"

"I don't know- I tripped on something. As she feels around her, she doesn't feel anything different than what she's been trudging on this whole time.

Its in this instance when she hears something again. Only it's not distant. It feels like it's right in front of her. And it's not laughter. It's a man saying her name: Carrie. She feels a hand on her injured leg, but it's not Jack's as his hands are around her waist hoisting her up..

She jumps back and almost takes Jack with her.

"Oh my god, a ghost just touched my leg!"

Once again, Jack doesn't believe her. "Babe, it was probably just a bug. Just try and walk."

Carrie is emphatic. She lets go of Jack and limps away on her own. She can't stand to be near him right now.

She's at the foot of one of the abandoned buildings. She doesn't see Ashley or Adam. Knowing them, they're probably in the cemetery having sex or something.

About ten feet above her she sees smoke in the night. She steps back and sees a candle in one of the broken windows.

'Why would there be a candle in a condemned building', she wonders.

She can't help her curiosity. She climbs over the piles of dead wood, shards of broken glass and tall, tall grass. She forgets about her injured knee and makes it to the doorway.

The rails are freezing as she grips them for guidance up to the second floor. The stairs creak and there are spiders everywhere, but she makes it to the second floor.

She goes to the window where the candle is burning. It couldn't have been lit more than 20 minutes ago.

She looks around at the graffitied walls. She feels an eerie presence... then she hears a sharp thud that echoes. She thinks it's Jack and calls for him.

She feels a hand over her mouth, but Jack is not around. It's not Ashley or Adam either!

"Carrie. I've been waiting for you. We've been waiting for you."

She looks around and sees a translucent figure with crazy white hair. This figure comes at her and grabs her hair. Her feet are off the ground. She's brought to the window and she's now straddling it. The candle is on the floor and the room is starting to smoke.

"Carrie, come to us!" The ghost yells in her ear.

She's trying to climb from the window, but something pushes her behind.

She falls on a piece of wood and it impails her. She's gone.

She awakes to a thousand ghosts all around her.

"Welcome home."
