BACKROOMS - A Teaser/Trailer Comparison.

Hello one and all. No, I haven't seen Backrooms yet, but with all the buzz surrounding YouTube star Kane Parsons' feature film debut based on his Internet Series, but just for funsies, I'd thought I'd do a review of his official teaser ad official trailer to see which one would twist my arm long enough to make me want to buy a ticket to see it.

Trailer One: The Teaser.

In an almost obvious homage to the opening of Jan De Bont's 1994 action-thriller, Speed, we have a camera pan from up to down with the voices of Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve with Chiwetel telling Renate about the many rooms he's ventured into trying to convince her of what he's seen and the very different room experiences from the possible back of a furniture store. My express thoughts are - it invites intrigue and mystery as to what these rooms are, if they're supernatural in nature, or if he's in some odd dream state. Now...

Trailer Two: The Main Official Trailer.

The full trailer set to a single off-key piano playing a monotone melody find's Ejiofor's character inside his ottoman store and talking to his therapist (presumably Reinsve) about what he's seen in his store's backrooms, each having their own different Feng Shui feel. Odd voices coming from the PA system while Ejiofor asks for a reply. Presumably, his store team uses 1990s camera technology to see what the backrooms hold or if they can locate any signs of life there. There seems to be a supernatural presence there as the rooms seem to duplicate into other rooms that are just as spacious and eerie. We then see Reinsve enter one of those very rooms before Ejiofor says in an almost ecstatic voice: "It's beautiful. Am I right?" while we hold on a scared, concerned look on Reinsve's face. She is soon trapped in some liminal space horror until - title drop. Sound ends save for the eerie endlessly "tinking" piano key.

My Verdict?

For my money - the teaser did a better of enticing me to see the movie than the actual trailer. It has a haunting vibe to it and allows for my imagination to run riot and imagine for myself what those rooms are about and if there's a paranormal presence that may be invading or manipulating them.

Conclusion.

For the record, I know little about the YouTube Kane Pixels channel that became the internet sensation that would yield the feature film. In this very instance and no pun intended - I am literally going in blind into this movie experience trusting the hype and word-of-mouth to guide me. A review will be posted soon after I see it.
