The Yowie is a half-ape, half-human cryptid that is said to exist in Australia and be Australia’s answer to the Yeti or the Bigfoot. Over the years there have been countless sightings of the creature with various different people claiming to have encountered it, seen it or even going as far to have claimed to have captured it. But what exactly is the Yowie.

Because of so many different accounts of the Yowie existing so does there exist various descriptions of the mythic beast. Some people have claimed it is as large as 14 feet tall, with immense regenerative powers (Watch year ABC’s 1979 interview) while others claim its no taller than the average human male, possessing the intelligence of cavemen and sharing the appearance of a gorilla. Because of so many accounts its easy to pass off the Yowie as just another made up animal however there are some people who have dedicated their lives to proving the existence of the Yowie and the results might just shock you.

The more commonly held beliefs about the Yowie are as so: They are said to be anywhere from 7-9 feet Tall with thick black fur and sharp teeth. They have been known to mimic the human voice on occasions and are believed to be nocturnal. While some of these details fluctuate depending on the account, these are on average the more agreed upon descriptions of the Yowie. The Yowie is said to live in the outback, in rural areas away from humans. Because of this it is believed to be a local myth, but people will still caution you to be careful driving around isolated rural roads at night in case you should encounter one of these creatures.

Take for instance this story as told on The Yowie Hunters Youtube Channel two years ago, where a gentlemen recounts his experience encountering the creature not once but twice on a rural road in New South Wales. He describes driving down the road and seeing the creature standing on the side of the road as he drives past it, and a second time as he drove down the road he could see the creature walking towards a dam through a clearing in the bush late at night. He described the creature as tall and muscular with long, mangy hair except for on its chest which he described as being bare.

This isn’t the only story someone has of encountering the Yowie on rural roads late at night. In December 2015 Crypto biologist Dean Harrison opened up about his two near death experiences with Yowies, one in Ormeau, Gold Coast, and another in Kilkivan near Gympie. He describes surviving only by the stroke of luck that he had people nearby who saved him, else he wouldn’t be here to tell the tale. He mentions that finding aggressive Yowies at night puts you at a significant disadvantage due to their superior eyesight at night time. He recounts the story of being pushed down a hill full of hazards and being chased by a Yowie, he states that it never missed a beat as it sprinted down the hill dodging obstacles.

Dean Harrison is one of Australia’s leading Yowie researchers who is a trusted source to Aussies report Yowie sightings to from all over the country. Often sharing these accounts with the rest of the world online, from accounts of Yowies attacking single mothers and their children living in isolated bushland to one account of a Truck Driver being stopped by a Yowie on early morning on delivery. Despite no hard evidence indicating the existence of Yowies, Dean Harrison believes that Australians should be vigilant, noting that these creatures are out there and you need to be careful.

March this year Austalian comedian Isaac Butterfield uploaded a video to his Youtube channel where he interviewed professional Yowie hunters and even took part in an expedition, documenting evidence of the existence of the creatures. Isaac Butterfield starts his adventure in the Sunshine Coast and interviews experts Ron and Jani. They explore the nearby wilder bushland where there have been countless Paranormal, Yowie and big cat sightings. Throughout his journey they capture footage of creatures communicating through tree tapping and later on are attacked by stones that they believe are from the local Yowies behaving territorial. Whether you believe what was captured on Isaac’s journey is evidence of the existence of Yowies is ultimately up to you, but there is no denying that what happened was strange.

Whether you believe in the existence of the Yowie, the Sasquatch, or the Yeti, there is no doubting that there is an array of unusual sightings of strange creatures all across the globe. Some people recounting peaceful encounters with Yowies, while others recount horror stories of them being attacked by the creature. I have left links to the full versions of all these stories in the article if you're interested in reading or watching more. Where do you stand on the situation? Let me know over on Twitter.
