Am I the Only One Still Celebrating Halloween?
On Halloween nostalgia, holding on to the magic, and wondering where everybody went.

Every year when October rolls around, I get excited about Halloween. I love the atmosphere, the movies, the candy, the events, and all the little things that make this time of year feel different.
For me, Halloween isn’t just about October 31. It’s the entire buildup. It’s seeing decorations, finding something good to watch, enjoying the spooky atmosphere, and having a reason to get into a different kind of mood for a few weeks.
But this year, I’ve been making a little extra effort to get into the spirit. Not because I’ve stopped enjoying Halloween, but because I’ve been looking around and wondering where everybody is.
Seriously, am I the only one still doing this?
Halloween Feels Different This Year
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not seeing as much Halloween enthusiasm as I’d like. I catch glimpses of it when I’m out, but it doesn’t seem to be everywhere the way I’d expect it to be during October.
I’ve also noticed the conversations about candy sales being down this year. I know there are reasons that have nothing to do with people losing interest in Halloween. Candy is expensive, and plenty of people are watching what they spend. Lower sales don’t automatically mean people aren’t celebrating.
Still, when I see less of the Halloween spirit around me and then hear about things like that, I start wondering what’s going on.
Are people celebrating differently? Are they spending less? Are fewer people decorating and going all out this year? Or am I just not seeing as much of it as I used to?
I honestly don’t know. I’m only going by what I’ve noticed, but it’s made me think about how much I still look forward to this holiday.
So I’ve Been Making My Own Fun
This year, I’ve decorated a little, carved a pumpkin, watched Halloween movies, and even made a few Halloween songs.
Yes, Halloween songs. 😂
I’ve been finding my own ways to enjoy the season, and I’m glad I have. I don’t need a big event or a whole neighborhood covered in decorations to get into the spirit. Sometimes, it’s enough to put on a movie, enjoy something seasonal, or do a little something to make my space feel festive.
But I do enjoy seeing other people get into it, too. There’s something about walking past a decorated house or seeing Halloween displays everywhere that adds to the experience. It makes the whole month feel like an occasion.
When you’re not seeing as much of that, you notice.
It’s not that I’m sitting around mourning the Halloween of my childhood. I still enjoy Halloween now. I just wish I could see more of that excitement around me.
I Don’t Want to Outgrow Something I Still Love
I think about nostalgia a lot, especially when it comes to things I’ve loved since I was younger. Sometimes we talk about nostalgia as if we’re always trying to go backward, as if we want to be kids again and have everything exactly the way it was.
That’s not necessarily how I feel about Halloween.
I don’t need to be a kid again to enjoy a scary movie, eat some candy, carve a pumpkin, or appreciate a house with great decorations. I can do all those things now. I can even add new traditions, like making my own Halloween music.
What I don’t want is to lose interest in something that still brings me joy.
Maybe that’s part of getting older. You realize that some things won’t always be a big part of your life unless you make an effort to keep them there. You get busy, your priorities change, and before you know it, something you used to look forward to can become just another date on the calendar.
I don’t want that to happen with Halloween.
And this year, I’ve been a little more intentional about enjoying it. I want to watch the movies, enjoy the atmosphere, and do the little things that make October special to me.
Surely I’m Not the Only One?
I know people have different circumstances. Some are dealing with higher costs, some have other priorities, and some may be celebrating in ways I don’t see. Not everybody decorates their house or posts about their Halloween plans online.
I’m aware of all that.
But when you’re someone who really enjoys a particular season, you want to see other people enjoying it, too. You want to see the decorations, the costumes, the events, and the excitement. It adds something to the experience when it feels like other people are participating.
That’s why I notice when it seems quieter than usual.
Maybe the Halloween spirit is alive and well, and I’m just not seeing enough of it. Maybe people are keeping things simple this year. Or maybe some people really aren’t feeling it as much.
Whatever the reason, I find myself wondering whether other Halloween lovers have noticed the same thing.
Are you still going all out this year? Are you decorating, watching your favorite movies, buying candy, or looking for things to do? Or has Halloween become a little less of an occasion for you?
I’m genuinely curious, because I know I’m not ready to stop celebrating.
I’ll Keep Showing Up for Halloween
At the end of the day, I can only speak for myself. I still love Halloween, and I’m going to keep enjoying it.
I’ll decorate when I feel like it. I’ll watch my movies, carve my pumpkins, make my songs, and enjoy the candy. I’ll take whatever opportunities I can to make the season feel special.
And if I see a great display or run into someone who’s just as excited about Halloween as I am, even better.
I don’t expect every year to feel exactly the same. Things change, people change, and the way we celebrate changes with them. That’s life.
But I don’t think getting older means we have to give up the things that make us happy. If anything, it might mean we have to be a little more deliberate about keeping them in our lives.
So, no, I’m not giving up on Halloween. I’m just wondering where everybody else is this year.
If you’re still celebrating, I’m right there with you. Let’s keep the spirit alive.
